HomeMy WebLinkAbout2010-04-20Dryden Youth Commission Minutes, April 20, 2010 Present: JoEllen Bailey, Justin DiMatteo, Kris Bennett Justin called the meeting to order at 6:40. Since no quorum was present agenda items requiring action were tabled until next month (approval of minutes, discussion re. youth employment). We also agreed not to plan a special, public. May meeting since there were not enough members present to plan and contribute to the discussion. However, we will discuss whether we should plan such an event for next year. Membership updates report The Still 2 open seats. Kris followed up with Mary Ann Sumner; she had not heard back from Charlie Dardia; Kris will follow up with Charlie to see if he might be interested. Ithaca Journal Laurel update No news, Stephanie was not present. Dryden Youth Development Task Force Update Justin reported there have been 2 recent meetings, including presentations by Cornell ACT for Youth. They are moving forward but are somewhat stuck between gathering more info about frameNvorksltheory vs. implementing actual programs. Recreation Kris did not receive any updates from Melissa beyond the regular Rec. newsletter. Identify Priority Goals & Action Items for DYC for 2010 Those present suggest DYC focus on: • Maintain Full and Active Membership — this hamstrings our ability to get things done and is the root of all other work. Justin will approach Freeville about their vacancy; Kris will check in with Mary Ann Sumner re. `town's vacancy. Kris will check with Town to see if vacancy can be listed on Town's website along with other municipal boards & committees. Justin suggested we check records to see how often we have been unable to ® conduct business due to lack of a quorum, Kris will check. Kris will also develop a flyer to be distributed to parents of participants in Dave & Julie's programs to seek out potential DYC members. • Publicize Programs & Activities — Dryden Dairy Days is the big community event (6112 this year); DYC could /should participate. Suggestion was to be in the parade (JoEllen will find out whether/how DYC could be OK'd to be in the parade). We could ask Dave /Julie to recruit kids to march in parade with banner, showing # of kids who participated in DYC funded programs in 2009. DYC members could march too, passing out small palm card sized info to parade watchers. DriWen Youth Oppurttwrity Frvrd is planning a community fair, tentatively scheduled for Sept. 11, to showcase Dryden youth activities. DYC should participate in this. Kris has been in touch with Cathy Whalen (844 -8304) re, this. • Identify Available and Needed Youth Services, Programs & Resources —This will include discussion later this year about youth employment, including whether DYC should establish limits or priorities about which youth should be served with our more limited resources (i.e., by age, by need, first time employees only, etc.) Any funding allocated now to youth employment is coming from the youth development funding. Review 2009 DYC annual report The draft report was reviewed, minor revisions were suggested. Kris will email to all DYC members for feedback. In May we will discuss plans for sharing with municipalities & others. Youth Employment Linda Schoffel has requested guidance about use of their allocated funds for 2010 for youth employment. This really cannot wait until May meeting. DYC members present asked Kris to tell Linda to use her best judgment. All have confidence that CCE will use the money appropriately to benefit young people. Plan for May 18 meeting JoEllen will not be able to attend. In addition to items mentioned in these minutes (planning for May 2011 public event, Dairy Days participation, Membership follow up, youth employment discussion, annual report distribution) Dave Hall, Julie Newman & Linda Sehoffel from CCE are scheduled to attend to share their annual report & summer plans. ® Meeting adjourned at 7:40 PM. youth /drydnyGagndmins/20I0.;apiI minutes
