HomeMy WebLinkAbout2010-02-230 Dryden Youth Commission February 23, 2010 Present: Justin DiMatteo. JoUlen Bailey, Cynthia Waterman, Stephanie McConnell, Kris Bennett Justin called the meeting to order at 6:00 PM. Minutes from January were approved. Goals DYC members reviewed the 2009 commission goals and objectives and made minor revisions. All agreed to remove the year at the top, eliminating the need to adopt them each year, and to add '`Last reviewed date" at the bottom. Additionally, at the April meeting, we will discuss identifying priority goals /action items for each year that we could then report on in our annual report (example: maintaining full & active membership). For the April meeting, all members are asked to bring a couple of suggestions for the 2010 list. Program Annual Reports Kris shared the 2009 annual reports that were submitted by funded programs. She will draft a DYC annual report with brief summaries for the next meeting. Membershig updates Still 2 open seats (one *r. Dryden, one V, Freeville)! Stephanie will check with the Cafe about holding the May meeting there; it could help promote awareness of DYC and programs. We will ask Dave and Julie (and possibly some kids from their programs) to make a presentation — powerpoint with engaging photos of youth participating in programs. Justin will check out availability of screen and will check school calendar to make sure there's no big conflict (school play, etc.), Kris can bring a projector & laptop. Kris suggested there would also be an opportunity — is there anything we would want to ask those who attend? We'll discuss in April as well as how to advertise the meeting. (DYC presents a showcase of youth programs in Dryden) Laurel Stephanie asked Kris to send what they had drafted to all DYC for review and comment. Funding application process & paperwork Kris explained that paperwork needs to be consistent, for the most part, across municipalities. Deadlines are driven by Town's need to have a budget request from DYC in September. It is unlikely that funding will increase next year and in fact it may decrease. For this reason, DYC members felt it does not make sense to solicit applications from new progrars. DYC is continuing to fund youth employment even though the County eliminated these funds. In April, we will discuss whether to add limits or priorities (hiring practices, ages, first time vs. repeat employees, youth salaries vs. job prep. programs). We will discuss this with regard to CCE youth employment as well as other DYC funded youth employment (Freeville & Dryden camps). Recreation No updates Dryden Youth Development Task Force Justin reported they had one more meeting but are no further than they were before. Another speaker will come to talk about an asset building program. Announcements Kris shared flyers re. March 6 countyrwide unwanted pharmaceutical collection event; please post flyers in Dryden public places. On Mar. 18 at Dryden H.S., there will be an evening presentation by Isabel Burk, nationally known presenter on youth substance use. "Parenting for Prevention" program will be open to the entire county. Kris will email details when they're ready.
