HomeMy WebLinkAbout2008-04-29® Dryden Youth Commission April 29, 2008 Minutes Present: JoEllen Bailey, InShik Lee, Cynthia Waterman, Tom Fuchs, Kim Schenck, Stephanie McConnell; liaisons Kris Bennett, Mary Ann Sumner; OURS program presenters: Linda Schoffel, Julie Newman, Jessica Houle, Rachel Kutcher, Kayla Altland, Rachel Jacobs JoEllen called the meeting to order at 6:35 and introductions were made. Minutes from March were approved. Report from CCE OURS program Linda reported that Julie Newman "hit the ground running" with grant writing ($2000 received), attending training (defensive driving, RAP (discipline) training), meeting OURS volunteers and the E board. The van has been ordered, they are hoping for a May delivery. 4 -H Acres has added a locking storage cabinet to which OURS is glad to have access, Julie shared a Powerpoint overview of OURS and described how YOURS mentors provide volunteers to OURS youth. L7 addition to showing photos of programming, she introduced: Kayla — leads Monday mentoring program serving 15 youth who are matched one -on -one with mentors (20 mentors participating, some kids get 2 mentors). Focus is on academic help and positive behavior. Use activity boxes with kids. Jessica — leads Thurs. teen leadership council of approx. 7 youth focusing on building confidence through conununity service. Got a grant to design and create games; the activity fostered. teamwork among kids who previously did not work well in groups. A second component of the program is Expressions: youth learn to express themselves, their feelings and dreams through writing, arts, etc. Rachel J. — described the Fun Friday experiential learning program for approx. 15 youth. This day is more relaxed; youth could choose from 3 main projects: mosaic (small grant received to fund this), model village, or cooking. Rachel K — chairs the board, oversees overall program. The 4 Cornell volunteers praised Julie for her support & organization and thanked DYC for funding the program this year. Since some of the YOURS volunteers are graduating, they feel good knowing the program has support to continue. In the past, little or no summer programming took place but this sununer, Julie and some in- to�,vn YOURS volunteers will provide limited programming in June and in the summer, details to be worked out (possibly gardening, day trips). Stephanie suggested connecting with V. Freeville summer rec. program since it's so close. OURS is holding an end -of- semester event for participants and families on Tues. May 6, 6-8 PM at 4 -H Acres, DYC members are invited to attend. Mary Ann asked whether Julie and YOURS volunteers would be willing to make a short presentation to the Town board, they agreed and will work out details. Youth Employment Guide Linda reported that Tom's group did phone calls to 100 Dryden businesses, 35 hire teens and will be listed in the guide. The youth are losing interest but Tom is keeping at it! Guide will go to print May 9. Linda agreed to check with Tom about call -backs to businesses that were not reached. Each year, CCE recognizes volunteers including youth commission members. Jo-Ellen's name was drawn to receive a prize which Linda gave her at the meeting. Dryden Youth Commission Annual Report Kris distributed copies of the completed report to all present. Members volunteered to share copies as follows: Dryden Town Board — May 14, JoEllen and/or Cynthia V. Dryden trustees — JoEllen V. Freeville trustees — Stephanie Dryden school board & superintendent — JoEllen, Cyntiva and/or Tom Dryden middle and high school principals — Kim Kris had already distributed to: 2007 funded programs, 2007 DYC members who are no longer on the board, county legislators, Dryden Conununity Cafe, Town of Dryden website, Living in Dryden website, Town of Dryden Rec. Director Membership Update Cynthia will follow up with Susan Trask; will invite her to the June DYC meeting acid give her a copy of the 2007 annual report. Kris had also heard from County Youth Services Board member (from Freeville) Georgiana Purdy that she knows of someone who is interested. Kris emailed the application to Stephanie and Freeville mayor Lotte Carpenter. ® g, 7 Recreation Master Plan Public u ��isionm,; n meeting to be held May 8, 7 PM At Town oven Hall. Facilitators will ask those attending about their past experiences with recreation and what they'd like to see. Next step will be to prioritize. Other Kris distributed summer camp guides, DYC members tool: copies to distribute to Town Hall, Community Cafd, Village offices, schools, TC3. Stephanie reported that Freeville's camp director this year will be Lacey Hulslander; she's a 21 yr. old student who's skilled and capable. Kim agreed to be the liaison to Freeville Youth Jobs. Plan for June 10 meeting (No May meeting.) JoEllen is unable to attend June 10; Cynthia will preside. We will review liaisons and make sure everyone has monitoring forms to make visits to summer programs. We will also invite CCE's Dryden Youth Services program managers to attend. The DYC decided that they do not need to hear as frequently from DYS; next year we will ask them to attend 3 times rather than 4: in Jan., June, & Oct. DYC Minutes Page 2 April 29, 2008
