Minutes
Present: Kim Schenck, JoEllen Bailey, Stephanie McConnell, Tom Fuchs, Mary Ann Sumner

JoEllen called the meeting to order at 6:35 p.m.. All welcomed new V. Dryden representative
Kim Schenck; she and Kris met for a DYC overview. Kim works at William George Agency
(aka George Jr. Republic) and is active in the Dryden community. We also welcomed Mary
Ann, T. Dryden supervisor, who will act as liaison between the Town and the DYC.
Presentation — Police and Community Pro ratzi DYC gave Margaret copies of all teacher
feedback forms from this school year and noted that they are very positive with Margaret as the
presenter. Margaret mentioned that building principals have not seen feedback forms and were
not aware of the DYC 's request. Stephanie reported that she had spoken with principals a while
back about the forms but when the time came to actually distribute them, she went through the
school secretary. Margaret will give copies to principals. Stephanie will distribute feedback
forms for spring presentations through school principals soon.
Margaret makes classroom visits in the fall and spring to each class at Freeville and
Dryden Elementary schools plus other drop in visits during the year during lunch and at other
times. She also serves on the building safety planning group. Scheduling continues to be
challenging. Margaret demonstrated one kit containing pictures of common items as part of a
® discussion and small group activity with kids on "what is it safe to play with." Presentation
includes how we can use or abuse items and how what we do affects other people.
Torn — How do you like being in the classroom? What other topics do you cover'?
Margaret — Likes doing the educational piece, being proactive, and developing rapport with kids.
Topics may be the same but are handled in different ways for different grades. For K -3, this fall
they focused on the role of police officers, guns, personal safety, strangers. For grades 4 -6,
internet, chatrooms and computer safety. Finds that topics need to be covered with younger kids
than in the past.
Kim — Thinks parents should be notified in advance about scheduled visits and topics. Her own
child with special needs might not react well to having a stranger in the classroom and having a
topic handled in a different way.
Margaret — Teachers might be able to notify parents ahead but often visits are not scheduled
enough in advance to notify parents via a newsletter.
JoEllen — Are you seeing any drug use among elementary kids?
Margaret — Any activity is with kids whose older siblings are involved.
On behalf of the DYC, JoEllen thanks Margaret for coming.
Minutes from January were approved unanimously.
CCE reports Kris distributed 'tom's and Dave's monthly reports. Tom visited Dave's Primitive
Pursuits program last week and slept over during the winter overnight. He said it was great!
Stephanie asked re. the youth employment manual; asked Kris to ask Tom to bring both a draft
of what's ready and a list of work sites. The V. Freeville has not yet been contacted about its
® youth jobs. Mary Ann said the town had not been either. She also suggested that Tom and the
youth working on the project check out the Living in Dryden website which includes a list of
Dryden businesses. Kris will pass this on to Tom.
OURS update Julie Newman was hired and is off to a good start, per Linda Schoffel. During
her first week she visited all 3 programs and the e -board meeting and is working on a grant. The
van has been ordered and a MOU has been signed with the Town. Julie will be taking defensive
driving class soon. Kris, Tom, Julie and Linda attended the OURS fundraiser on Feb. 8, OURS
participants helped announce the Cornell student acts and there was short informative
presentation about OURS.
Membership Kris distributed new rosters showing all seats are filled except one for V. Freeville.
Stephanie will keep trying. Stephanie also announced that she is resigning her post as V.
Freeville clerk effective the end of the fiscal year.
Report from T. Dryden Mary Ann asked for clarification on the CCE budget which Kris
provided. She announced that the Town is working on a town - .vide, long range recreation plan
addressing both youth and adult recreation and leisure time needs. Ken Teeter from Thomas
Consultants is helping with this. They are including all 4 community centers in the discussions
and would like the DYC to be involved. Details to be worked out.
Other: V. Dryden Mouth hiring request Kris received a call from Deb Marrotte at V. Dryden.
While Deb usually aims to provide work opportunities to new youth, she would like to rehire the
young woman who worked in the office last summer. is this OK with DYC? Kris explained that
while V. Dryden's request for funding does lay out its goal to hire new kids, it is not a
requirement of the funding stream. DYC agreed this would be OK, Kris will notify Deb.
Annual Report Kris passed around the folder of 2007 annual reports received from DYC funded
programs. Kris will prepare a draft DYC annual report for review at the next meeting. DYC-
members said they liked the template Kris used last year but she should shorten the needs
assessment in this year's version.
Drvden Community Cafe DYC has been invited to have a display at the soon -to -open cafe.
What do we want to display? We will have space for 4 standard size pages. For now, we gave
Kim, who is involved with the cafd, copies of CCE "s current programs and a DYC annual report.
At next month's meeting we'll spend some time discussing this further.
The meeting was adjourned at 8:10 PM. Next meeting will be March 18, 6:30 PM. CCE will
attend.
