HomeMy WebLinkAbout2007-11-28Dryden Youth Commission November 28, 2007 Minutes Present: JoEllen Bailey, Cynthia Waterman, Stephanie McConnell, Kris Bennett, Linda Schoffel, Dave Hall, potential new DYC member Tom Fuchs JoEllen called the meeting to order at 6:40 in die new Town Hall. introductions were made. Minutes Sept. minutes were reviewed but since no quorum was present they were not adopted. Reports from CCE's Dryden Youth Services Linda first shared a recent USA Weekend article about kids' need for time in nature (consistent with many of Dave's programs). She distributed a budget update; some areas are overspent but have been adjusted from other underspent lines. Overspent lines include youth employment and van mileageluse. Linda distributed Tom's report. With the assistance of a CCE nutrition educator and using grant funds from Cargill he has been offering A Recipe for Success which encourages healthy eating and lifestyle. A service learning group is working to compile info for the youth employment guide. Though the guide will not be complete by year's end, the group should have a good idea of the guide's size, allowing Linda to use the grant to pre -pay the printing costs. They will use a portion of the grant for paying a young person to do the typing /computer work of the guide. Stephanie asked to see a draft oi' both the template being used to collect info on businesses that hire youth as well as a draft of the guide before it goes to press. Linda will ask Toni to email to Kris who will forward it to DYC ® members. Linda will also forward list of businesses and asks that DYC members review it and let Tom know of any other local suggestions. Toni asked whether there are plans to also post it on the internet; suggestions include posting on sites of DYC, Dryden High school, CCE. JoEllen asked whether DYC could have a bulletin board at the middle /high school. Dave said the school lets CCE post program notices and thinks they'd support this. Dave shared his report. IIigh School adventure group is just starting, students will be working toward and planning a trip for later in the year. Other programs are going well. Animal Helpers is popular as always. Budget Update Kris reported that both the County and Town budgets have passed. She sent fiuiding award letters out to programs based on Sept. allocations meeting. OURS Program Launch Kris and Linda have met with Jessica Houle and others from OURS to plan for the transition in 2008 when OURS will have a.5 FTE staff person funded by DYC. Kris reported that the Town Board approved $5000 additional for a van lease for the program (with the additional plan for $5000 more in 2009). Kris, Linda and OURS are working on a job description and will plan to jointly interview candidates in early 2008; DYC is invited to participate, too. Linda visited the Monday Mentoring program yesterday (which includes academic support & mentoring for a broad age range) and had many positive things to say about the program. Thursday's program is teen leadership, Fridays is a fun day with crafts, field trips, etc. Each day's program has a different Cornell student coordinator. Each day a student uses one of the CCE vans to make 2 runs to pick up the kids from the 2 trailer parks and transport them to 4 -H Acres, Approx. 22 kids participate, some all 3 days, some on just one or two. The new staff person will become a part of RYS under L,inda's supervision, also providing peer resources and other CCE resources. Police & Community Program Update Stephanie has been in regular contact with Margaret Ryan who is doing the classroom presentations this year. Margaret has shared a schedule of presentations with Stephanie. Stephanie & Kris developed a brief feedback form, Stephanie will distribute it to schools to ask for teacher feedback. Membership Updates Tom Quinn resigned his seat on the DYC. Toni Fuchs is interested in being appointed (he had pursued appointment months ago by the- V. Freeville but since he does not reside in the Village they declined to appoint him.) Kris gave Tom the necessary forni, he will complete and submit it to Town Hall. There are 2 other anticipated openings — one for V. Dryden, one for V. Freeville. Cynthia will ask V. Dryden resident Kim Skan.k if she would serve, She is a longtime Dryden resident, coordinated the Dairy Days parade, teaches at George Jr. Stephanie said she has included notice in 3 mailings to all Freeville residents about the open seat but no one has stepped forward. Kris spoke in Oct. with V. Dryden's Deb Marrotte about their open seat and asked whether she could advertise it in a PSA. Deb asked that she wait until she checks with Reba. Kris will ask the Dryden Courier and Ithaca Journal to run PSA's after we learn whether Kim is interested or not Youth Conunission Event in October Cvnthia, Linda and Kris reported that this event was fun and inspiring, helping communities to focus on their assets and build on what they've got. It was a good opportunity to network with other youth commission members. Plan for Dec. Meeting We will meet on Dec. 18, 6:30 PM at 'Town Hall. Included on the agenda — nominate officers for 2008, plan a calendar for the year, set liaisons. We will order a pizza and eat while we meet. Kris will bring beverages, JoE.11en, a dessert.
