HomeMy WebLinkAbout2007-03-20Dryden Youth Commission March 20, 2007 Minutes Present: Stephanie McConnell, InShik Lee, JoEllen Bailey, Tom Quinn, Kris Bennett, Linda Schoffel, Tom Archibald JoEllen called the meeting to order at 6:35 PM. Introductions were made, all welcomed Stephanie, a new rep. from Freeville. ULdates and annual report from Cornell Cooucrative Extension Tom distributed copies of his monthly update. The animal adventures group will broaden kids' experiences beyond dogs and cats. In the food program, kids are taking their experiences home, cooking recipes for their family and broadening their diet. They will be going mapling soon. He has a new in- school program now (during lunch time) focused on career exploration and youth employment. He will also be developing job sites. If any DYC members have suggestions for job sites please refer them to Tom. Linda distributed Dave's report. The computer animation program was cut short by one class due to a new restriction from the school district to not allow access to computers. Dave is proposing a new program to serve home- schooled kids in a Primitive Pursuits program, DYC members supported this idea. Linda next distributed copies of Dave's and Tom's 2006 annual reports. A total of 169 youth participated in one or more program. Linda also shared - brochures about the April 29 Duck Race fundraiser and a series of Sustainable Tompkins study circles to address energy issues. Finally, CCE is hoping to go to town boards to share info about Rural Youth Services; Kris suggested that this be tied to when DYC presents its annual report to the Dryden Town Board. Minutes Minutes from January and February were approved. DYC Annual Report Kris shared a drag of a 2006 DYC annual report. One minor revision was requested, she will take care of this, have copies printed and have it posted on the DYC website. Kris will contact Patty Millard at Town Hall about getting on the agenda at a future meeting so the report can be presented. JoEllen will present to V. Dryden trustees, Stephanie will share with V. Freeville trustees. We will also give copies to programs funded in 2006 and the Dryden School District, 2007 Youth Empllovment Resource Allocation As discussed at the Feb. meeting, several Dryden sites are interested in providing a subsidized youth employment opportunity, using funds supplied by DYC. inShik moved and Tom seconded the following allocations: Program]Agencv Amount Puroose # vouth Dryden Police Dept. $1,001 Summer intern in office 1 Dryden Rec. Dept. $3,789 Help with skateboard park (2 youth, 16+ yrs., 10 hrs /vrk each from 3 May 1 -Oct. 1), $8.00 /hr + fringe for 22 wks V. Dryden youth jobs $3,464 Help in public works - yard work, painting and facility maintenance, 1 office work Youth assistants to Tom & Dave, Tom to develop other job sites (in Cornell Cooperative Extension $3,500 school: library, office, after school program, bus garage, artroom 5 clean u + in community; also at Brooktondale Farmers Mkt. TOTAL $11,754 The vote was unanimous to approve. Kris will notif}1 all. There is still $3290 that has not been allocated; Kris spoke again with Vicky Alexander at DHS about possible life guard jobs; Vicky 40 requested that Kris try to set this up through the Dryden Rec. Dept. so she contacted Jen Dube who will talk with Ralph Boettger (DHS athletic dept) and get back to us. Other possibilities I nclude supporting some staffing at Brooldondale Camp and some job prep. work by CCE (such as lifeguard or first aid classes). Police & Community Teacher Feedback JoEllen connected with Dr. Michael Simons, asst. principal. Evaluation forms had not been distributed but grade level team meetings were scheduled to occur shortly so Dr. Simons asked each team to complete the feedback form. JoEllen shared copies of the feedback from teams from 3`d, 41", and 5t' grade teams plus one team that did not indicate the grade level. They reported that no presentations had yet been made during this school year. Feedback about last year's presentations was mixed. We will put this on our April agenda for further discussion about next steps. Before a meeting with Chief Ryan we want to have the Freeville school reports, too; Kris will contact Alan Macomber to try to get them from him. 2007 Municipal Youth Services Planning Questions As part of the County Youth Services Dept's. needs assessment and gathering of feedback, the Dept. is asking all local youth commissions to help with a project. She shared a questionnaire and cover letter and asked that each DYC member complete a few .face -to -face interviews of key Dryden people, complete the questionnaires and return them to CYS office by April 15. Results by town as well as by the county as a whole will be tabulated and shared later this spring. All present agreed to participate and identified stakeholders they would contact (InShik — senior citizens, medical, faith; Stephanie — law enforcement, elected officials, businesses; Tom — schools; JoEllen — others) Kris will also send the pages to Cynthia. Other, plan for Aril meeting Kris was in contact with Dan Sclunohe from the Dryden Rec. Commission about a joint meeting between our 2 groups. Their next meeting is April 4; this does not work for DYC members but May 2 does. Kris will contact Dan about this. Kris distributed a Group Vitality instrument that all were asked to look at before next month's meeting. We will complete it together at the April meeting.
