HomeMy WebLinkAbout2005-10-18Dryden Youth Commission is October 18, 2005 Minutes Present: Tracy Kurtz, InShik Lee, Kristen Blackman, Lyndsi Prignon, JoEllen Bailey, Kris Bennett, Nita Baldwin, Linda Schoffel, Dave Hall Tom Archibald Excused: Eric McConnell, Alan Macomber Tracy called the meeting to order at 6:35, introductions were made. Program Report from Cornell Cooperative Extension Dave reviewed his report and recent programs. Orienteering (5 participants) may evolve into an overnight They went on the Finger Lakes Trail near Greek Peak, using maps and compasses. Bow making turned into a lesson on tool use. Priinitives has 17 participants now, looking to do an overnight in Dec. or Feb. — 2 nights for "veterans ", 1 for new kids. Stilt walking didn't fill up and was cancelled. Bird Brain has just begun with a visit to the school of ornithology. Tom has a Frisbee program (5 enrolled), program stresses respect; they are doing games Tom introduced plus have been creative in inventing new games. His Bikes program stresses skills, safety and repair as well as looking at bikes for "green" transportation. Green -Thumbs, Green Thoughts was cancelled, the core group from last year did not return. He's doing a career exploration program, first week was a visit to the Finger Lakes School of Massage, next will take kids to a health fair. He's planning a career /job search program for spring, will include resume ® writing, interviewing, etc. and will allow him also to recruit for Youth Conservation Corps as part of this program. Future programs planned: home energy conservation program, will cover simple ways youth can help their families conserve energy and save money at home. Asked for suggestions from DYC on this, and suggestions included visiting the roof of the school to see the solar panels, visiting the Cornell energy efficient house that was recently displayed in Washington DC and won second prize; connecting with NYSEG and local businesses. Also planning food, nutrition and cooking program and Moving & Grooving to get kids active. This may be offered on a Friday, no other programs are offered on this day so it will be a test. Linda shared a budget update, spending is appropriate for the end of 3 quarters. She requested that we look at YCC's timeline and clarify CCE's roles in the process. Kris will arrange a meeting for Linda, Kris and Allen Green from IYB. Linda also reviewed the systemwide RYS evaluation project (included in their request for fiinding proposal); a brochure to summarize findings will -be ready soon. Each program manager will again do an in -depth evaluation of one program he offers that serves kids over the long term. Funding Update `rhe Town board allocated $39,882 for the 2006 DYC, our total, if the County budget process continues as expected, will be $$79,764. Kris sent letters to Coddington and Finding Our Strength to notify them they will not receive funding in 2006. Kris emailed the other programs that they will be funded but held off on notifying the dollar amount until the County budget is finalized. Nita has contacted programs that have not yet vouchered the Town for funds: Village of Dryden, Village of Freeville, Coddington, Finding Our Strength, Brooktondale Camp. ® Membership Update JoEllen has submitted her application to the Village of Dryden and will appear at their board meeting on Thursday. She will notify Kris when she has been appointed. Then Kris will ask Jennifer Dube to update the DYC website; it does not yet show Lyndsi as a member. Tracy ® reported that Cynthia Waterman has agreed to serve, milling the seat that Eric is vacating. Tracy asked Kris to send her the needed paperwork. inShik's term expires in Dec., she has agreed to serve again. Kris will contact the V. Freeville and ask them to reappoint her. Alan's term also expires in Dec., Kris will contact him to see if he wants to serve again and if so, ask the V. Dryden to reappoint him. Recreation Update Tracy reported that the Rec. Commission did busy launching all the fall activities. There will be another Club middle schoolers. The skateboard park event took place as sched raining 15 kids came and used the temporary facilities. Goals Because of a lack of time, no discussion was held on this. Kris distributed copies of the draft goals developed for 2003 but never adopted. All are asked to review the draft so this can be discussed in Nov. Kris pointed out one addition she proposes to coordinate with other groups. Kris pointed out that the DYC worked on revisions to the bylaws /guidelines but these have to be approved by the 3 municipalities. She encouraged the DYC members to adopt goals first. Reports to Town and Villages Conversation evolved into raising awareness in the community about ® the DYC and its programs. All agreed we need to make programs more visible. Ideas include connecting regularly with town and village boards, asking, CCE to attend the April 26`h open house for 5`h graders entering middle school in the fall, having our own "annual meeting" to showcase programs, having more in the school bulletin (perhaps a testimonial about the CCE programs from a parent or participant), connecting with local service organizations (Kiwanis, Sertoma). Kris will send minutes from the last quarter to the mayors and supervisor, will present budget info. to all when it's finalized. More discussion of this is needed at a future meeting. Other Kris reported that the transportation survey she mentioned last month is being postponed until after Jan. l in order to make needed revisions. Action teams are still being organized to help craft the survey and plan on how to advertise it so there is good participation. Kris reported that the Orange Juice Guide to Teen Services and Activities is being finished. It will be distributed to all middle and high schoolers in the County in Jan. 'rhe OJ Guide will have coupons in the back for youth to use at area businesses, she asked DYC members for suggestions of Dryden area businesses to contact for coupons. Good suggestions were made, Kris will follow up. Plan for next meeting The DYC will next meet on Tuesday, Nov. 15 at 6:30 pm at Town Hall. Lyndsi will contact Police & Community and invite them to attend; Kristin will invite Youth Conservation Corps. The meeting was adjourned at 8:30 pm. DYC Minutes Page 2 October 18, 2005
