Attorney Fitzgerald explained 1983 amendment to the Real Property Tax Law that permits taxing authorities to give property tax relief on a sliding scale to senior citizens whose incomes are higher than the present income limits for the 50% exemption. At present property owners whose income falls below $8000 for the Town, Villange and School and $10,500 for the County get the full 50% exemption. Under the new provisions a home owner would get a 45% exemption if his income exceeded, our present maximum by $500; 40% if his income was $500 to $1000 over our present maximum. For each additional $500 of income up to $3000 the exemption would go down 5%, to a low of 20 %. If we want this provision to become effective for 1984 assessment rolls, we must act on or before May 1. Town Clerk will check to see if original action was ordinance or Local Law, Claim Nos. 1 to 6 of the Highway Fund in the amount of $3,28S.92 and Claim Nos. 1 to 10 of the General Fund in the amount of $13,891.83 were presented for audit.
