Finding Our Voices Anne and Gina are both educators who live in Se Dryden. `they overcame some logistical problems Friend/family (insurance, use of school, etc.) before launching this SchooUcommunity program this fall. Anne made a presentation to Dryden faculty who identified girls who would world ® benefit from the program. The girls were invited and currently there are 5 regular and one part -time participants, all 7 "' and 8`h graders. Four others have been invited to join. The girls are exploring Who Am I? How do I fit into my worlds (see diagram). Through writing and music the girls have been finding their voice and learning to be powerful. They met with Dryden Spt. Crawford and his secretary; they had wanted to speak directly with the Board of Education but the Spt. wanted the girls to go through existing channels. They have drafted guidelines for faculty. Next steps include recording P.A. announcements to be played at school. They've drafted the text and brainstormed who could read the announcements. They will speak with the character ed. convnittee and are considering launching a 'zinc for others' thoughts on this issue. They will be continuing with the existing group.through the end of the school year. CCE Dryden Youth Services Dave's programs have resumed after break. He had 10 Dryden and 4 Lansing youth for a winter overnight that was a great success. He's planning a 4-day expedition to the Adirondacks (using a Park Foundation grant). He had 3 in- school groups. Participants were referred by school guidance and are working on teamwork skills and positive communication. Linda reported that Bridget's Green Thumbs group is going well. They've planted many bulbs and done work around the school. This is the only program Bridget is offering for now. Viola's Supersitters group had 13 participants the first day. Linda distributed copies of the budget. Since it will soon be time to advertise for the % time program manager position, she proposed that the job focus 1/3 on youth employment. This would include programs to build job skills as well as facilitating employment for youth (such as Youth Conservation Corps, Library job, etc.) DYC members thought this sounded like a good plan and authorized Linda to proceed. They also asked whether there was a job board for posting youth job openings. Linda and Dave said no but they would look into this. 'T'racy reported that the Village of Dryden has been unable to find enough youth to fill temporary jobs like seniors needing shoveling, raking. Linda will make sure the new 1/2 time program manager connects with the Village office about this. Kris asked who from the DYC is interested in serving on the interview committee, times TBA. Alan, 'Tracy and InShik volunteered. Kris and Linda will screen resunnds and contact DYC to arrange convenient interview times. 2005 Goals, Plans Due to lack of time, this was tabled until next month. Other Tracy suggested a new web resource: wrxNrxai.tompkins- co.orL /plamiinp,/ that might be interesting /fun for youth and program managers. There are maps and useful info. Kris reported that she's asked Jeri Staton to update the DYC website for 2005, most updates have been done. She has sent out requests for annual reports from programs funded in 2004, they are due by 2/18. The Racker Center is hosting the Search Institute on May 6 & 7 (these are the correct dates). Location TBA. (Kris passed out materials introducing the Search Institute and their 40 Developmental Assets.) The first day will be for Racker Center staff, the second day for the community. It would be great if communities could send a team to explore how to provide opportunities for youth. Next meeting will take place Feb. 15, 6:30 pm at Dryden Town Hall. There will be no visitors so this will be a good opportunity for a working meeting. . The meeting was adjourned at 8:10 pm. DYC Page Two January 18, 2005
