Kris's updates for the Dryden Youth COnlnlission meeting on Nov. 16, 2004
Bud yet - The state aid amounts have changed slibhtl.-: in the range of $9 -$75 less per municipality
than we had anticipated. There is a good chance that the County will approve an increase to
municipalities of about 1,5%x. So when it's all over, rllu.ricipalilies may get a slight increase over
projected, even with a decrease in state aid. This should be finalized by the end of Nov. Also still
pending is the Town's adoption of its 2005 budget and whether they'll match state and county aid or
keep their contribution the same as 2004.
Award Letters for 2005 .Prograrns - i I }:ive 110 sen t lythin •out and w'll wail until the budget is
Fine hzed. ay GU
• ( ooperative Extension - Dave will be staying F611 time in Dryden. Lin submitted a grant request
lo NYSEG to pay for running the program listing in the Sept. 2005 Shopper again. No word yet on
whether it's been approved.
LandscarIe Apprentice Training Project - A glitch arose when Monica told Linda and 13ridget that
thCy wo1.rld not be. able to provide the tools to the youth participants as planned because their
bLIdget had been cut. Linda called nlc to ask about this. i told her that the budget was cut because
they were reducing the number of classes by 1I3 by holding the program in the fall rather than in
the spring as originally proposed. In addition, the tools were a vital part of the program and one
reason the DYC liked it so much; the participants would be more likely to get a
lanclscaping/gardening job if they had their own tools. I told Linda I'd be happy to clarify this with
Nlonika but Linda decided to first try to handle it herself.
Commission Recruitment - After asking Reba Taylor [fit would be OK, 1 sent a press release about
the V. Dryden opening on the DYC to the Dryden Shopper, .Dryden Tidbits, Dryden Courier and
Ithaca Journal. The Shopper runs only paid ads so it won't appear there. The Dryden Tidbits is no
lodger being published. 13ut hopefully the Courier and ithac,I Journal might generate some interest.
I put Tracy and my contact info in the notice.
Youth Conservation Corps - We already have 2 project suggetiliorls for next suninier! 1) Reba
Taylor would like kids to "police" the area adjacent to the park where the Concerts in the Park take
place - litter clean up, etc, This would be just once a week for an 1101.11- or so but would be a big
help. 2) Linda Schoffel suggested building a new footbridge at 4 -H Acres which is owned by
Cooperative Extension (a not - for -profit organization so that would be fine) and in (he Town of
Dryden. (The current bridge cannot be used because of its state of disrepair.) 1 asked her whether
CCE would have funds to provide the supplies, she said she would check. I saw Allen Green at a
function and shared these ideas with him and told him the DYC recommended funding again f'or
YCC for next sunlnler (though S2 less than he'll requested). I also told him about Steve Steliek's
concerns about the Ithaca Youth Bureau "administrative" costs and that I'd left: a message for Steve
but he hadn't called me back.
Meeting with Jennifer Staton - I met with new Dryden Rec, Director Jennifer Staton on Oct. 25.
She's settling In and was glad to learn more about the .DYC. I also clad fled some of the various
groups in the area that can be a bit confusing: the Dryden Youth Commission, the Dryden Rec.
Commission, the 1ecreation Partnership, the Recreation Directors group, the County Youth
Services Dept.
December Meeting - Please let me know if you want me to ask Paul Streeter from the Dryden
Youth Opportunity Fund, to collie to the mCuting.
Nita lias agreed to type up the minutes from Nov. 16, phase give her the notes. CIS
