Video project included girls, 4 boys. They are seeking money far a project they are wofking on with Buzie Monagan of Sustainable Tompkins, A Slice of Life in Dryden. The participants have teamed the basics of using video and editing equipment. Summer Skies is filling up (all except Animal Helpers). Looking to hire a teen helper for part of the summer. Primitive Pursuits wilt take place in the afternoons; planning to have a 2 night overnight, Working with youth on a grant proposal to Park Foundation; project will build youth leadership and culminate in a 34 night expedition to the Adirondacks. They are also working an a ebpage. The Floating Classroom is a new initiative, Bridget reviewed her program report, The Creativity Club tumed into Green Thumbs. The Lyme Hollow trip fell through; participants weren't available, The Girls Gatheri ng. was a challenging group, lots of girls with high needs. At first she wasn't clear on her role in recruiting kids for the Youth Conservation Corps but as of this meeting there were 13 applicants, Deadline was extended, Kids are reluctant to commit without knowing what the project will be, Expressed a wish that there was better networking between youth searing agencies on youth summer jobs; in addition, she's not sure whether she should hire a summer assistant who's might otherwise be interested in YDD. Kris asked who at CCE participated in the summer youth employment meeting the County organized. Linda said she usually would but could not attend, Kris said there is a first compiled by County Youth Services on youth summer jobs, it's been distributed and is available at the CYS webs ite. Kris will also forward to Linda and Bridget, Linda distributed a budget update. She also shared an article from the Ithaca Times in which the DYC was thanked for supporting teen activities. Landscape Training for Youth Project - Bridget has also been enlisted to help recruit for this project that still has not begun, Walt reported on his and Kris' efforts to get information from Monika Roth; her responses have not been timely and she has not kept DYC up to date with proposed changes to the program, She is now stating that the program will run in the fall, Under this plan, it won't help kids find summer jobs as originally designed. DYC members decided they need to take another look at this program and will request that Monika attend the July meeting with an update on the program's plans and to answer questions, Youth Conservation Corps; Kris had a call from Allen Green, IYB, last week about the low number of applications to date for YC. (As of last week there were only 8 applications for the 8 jobs.) Iris gave him several suggestions on advertising the prograrn but Allen said they do riot have money in their budget either to pay for ads (though they did run one in the Shopper after being told CCE would not be doing so this year) or for staff time before the actual program begins. He believes this should be CDE's responsibility. How much of CE's time is reasonable to help with this project? Thfs year Bridget spent considerable time an this though she agreed that some was because she was new_ Should DYD specify more clearly for 2005 proposal what it expects from IYB? More discussion is needed as well as an update to the "IYSICEICYC roles and responsibilities" list created 2 years ago, Monitoring: Kris offered monitoring sheets to DYC members. We reviewed who is responsible for which programs (Kris also tries to monitor) and made a couple changes: Finding Our Stren thNoice Tracy Brooktondale Summer Camp Eric CCE Landscape Training for Youth Walt IYB Youth Conservation Co Ts Walt CCE Dryden Youth Services Tracy Police & Community Jr. Police Acad. Alan Coddin ton CIT Youth Employment InShik Freeville Youth Jobs cam Kristen Dryden Youth Jobs cam Trac Follow up to May Meeting discussion of by -laws: Since time was getting late and since Walt had left and there was no longer a quorum, this discussion was tabled until another time. Plan for July Meeting: All agreed they would like to have reps. there from the summer programs (Freeville CampNouth Jobs, Brooktondale Camp, Coddington CIT program, Dryden Campfyouth Jobs) at next month's meeting. Since the DYC also wants to have time for the Landscape Program, it was agreed to poll the remaining members to see if they are available to start the July 20 meeting at 6 pm. We would allow 2 hrs. for this meeting, the camp programs from 6 - 7, the Landscape Program from 7 -7:30 and other business from 7:30 - 8. Kris will check with Kristen, Alan and Walt on this. We need to give adequate notice to programs that we would like a rep. at the meeting. Other: Tracy reported that if the Dryden school budget (vote is June 22) fails again, a contingency budget ® is automatically in place. Under this scenario, programs using the school to meet (like CCE) would have to pay for use of space. Kris reported that it's difficult at this time to give an estimated budget for 2005; NYS's budget is still not passed. The County process will begin soon. At this stage it look like funding for DYC for 2005 would not increase; if a decrease is needed it would likely be small. Kris will bring drafts of the request for 2005 funding proposal letters to the July meeting for review by the DYC. She will send these out in July with a return deadline of early Sept. Meeting adjourned at 8:45 pm, DYC Minutes Page Two Jtme 15, 2004
