HomeMy WebLinkAbout2004-04-20Dryden Youth Commission April 20, 2004 Minutes Present: Walt Matyjas, Kristen Blackman, Tracy Kurtz, Eric McConnell, Alan Macomber, Nita Baldwin, Kris Bennett, Steve Stelick Absent: InShik Lee Tracy called the meeting to order at 7:04 pm. Minutes from February were approved. Discussion of March CCE Showcase - All DYC members attended and enjoyed the program managers' presentations on youth programs but felt the administrative introductions were too long. Tracy like the cooking program (Groton) which ties in with the farmers market. Other programs that stood out: ecology/ environmental friendly programs, Big Friend /Little Friend (Tburg), mural. (Walt had an idea for a mural project near the new IWIM and spoke with YCC and the Village about this. However, the building is considered "historic° an not suitable for a mural.) P Dave Hall's Performance Review - Linda Schoffel will be conducting Dave's annual performance review and wants feedback from the DYC. Kris read the questions and commission members responded. Kris will deliver the form to Linda. All were very positive in their opinions of Dave and his work with youth. Review of Draft Annual Report and Plan for Sharing - After a brief discussion of whether to include a statement about declining revenue in the report, it was decided to leave this out and perhaps use another medium for this. One minor revision was made, correcting the YCC report to say Jim Schug Trail. Kris will make the change and print copies. Tracy will present the Annual Report to the Town at their 5/13 meeting. Alan will contact the Village of Dryden and Kristen will contact the Village of Freeville to make arrangements. Others who should receive the report: Dryden's County Legislators (Totman, Robertson, Lane), Dryden School Principals, Dryden School Board and Superintendent, Jennifer Glaab and Rec. Commission. Tracy will contact the school board and let Kris know which meeting would be best for them. Kris is willing to attend any of these meetings with DYC members, just let her know, DYC Website - Kris sent Jennifer Glaab some text to be posted on the DYC website. Kris thinks it would be a good idea to include information on 2004 programs and distributed her suggestions. Kris will send info to each program for verification and updating (for example, should YCC list Ric Dietrich rather than Allen Green ?) and will then ask Jennifer to upload onto the website. Update on new programs, monitoring -1) Kris has had several conversations with Gina and Anne about Finding our Strength, Finding Our Voices. They had a meeting with the Dryden principal and superintendent to discuss using school space for the program. (School district policy requires programs to have insurance.) They may link to CCE for insurance. Kris also suggested contacting Klein's Archery as a potential site. Kris also suggested postponing until fall; the program can happen any time in 2004. Gina and Anne are supposed to get back to Kris with an update. 2) Kris has been in touch with Monika Roth from the Landscape Training Program. They need to find a new trainer but are using Dave and Bridget to advertise the program and recruit youth participants. Walt, as liaison, will call or email them for an update. 3) Tracy, liaison to CCE, has visited Bridget's Girls Group a couple of times, The group keeps growing and ® now has around 12 participants. 4) Walt has been in touch with YCC several times. Ric has a meeting on Apr. 22 with municipal leaders to get project suggestions. They are being more proactive this year. DISCUS$ ion of B.ylaws - It's been years since these have been reviewed and all agreed they rneed updating, Several changes were agreed to, others were raised as needing change but need more discussion Frst (one area is how to include youth, soliciting }youth input, Youth Advisory Council - we don't have a youth member or a YA , Can we hear from youth through forums, summits, surveys, tie in to school senate, etc), Also discussed the possibility of allowing a proxy or absentee ballot if unable to attend, except to approve the budget and funding). Kris will make suggested changes in text, highlighting omissions /additions, for further discussion at the next meeting. Discussion of Coals - No time was left so this was tabled, Recreation Commission Update - The Summer Concert Series will take place again this year at Montgomery Park (a youth concert, aimed at young adults, will be at Dryden Lake where there are fewer neighbors to be bothered by loud music); will have food concessions too as a fundraiser. Funding is pending for the bleacher seats at the baIIfields; they are cautiously optimistic. (If funding comes through YCC could have this as a summer project.) Other upcoming rec, events; summer canoe rentals are planned for Dryden Lake; pitch hit & run competition coming soon; 5 and 10 K. running races; soccer. Will have a float in the parade, suggested they link with CCE on this. Other? Plan for May & June - Kris will not be at the flay meeting but can prepare agenda. Start time for May and June meetings will be 7;00 PM- Suggested postponing meeting with Police & Community until L ust after summer Jr, Police Academy, TI C Minutes Paa-e 'I'Wo April 20, 2004
