HomeMy WebLinkAbout2004-02-24® Dryden Youth Commission February 24, 2004 Minutes Present: Tracy Kurtz, InShik Lee, Eric McConnell, Kristen Blackman, Kris Bennett, Nita Baldwin, Linda Schoffel, Dave Hall, Bridget Gaines, Jennifer Glaab (second half of meeting) Excused: Alan Macomber Absent: Walt Matyjas Tracy called the meeting to order at 6:03 pm. All introduced themselves since there were two new people present: InShik, newly appointed DYC rep. from Freeville, and Bridget, new half -time program manager. Kris also reported that V. Freeville has appointed Kristen to a new term, The January minutes were approved with one correction: in 15 line 4, correct the spelling to "Schug° trail. Cooperative Extension Updates: Bridget will be meeting with school staff next week; Carissa and Dave are introducing her around. She's begun planning events and programs; she has a special interest in gardening and plants; she will be continuing Creativity Club and Girls' Group. She asked for suggestions on where to focus a $500 beautification grant in Dryden; in addition to contacting Reba at the V. of Dryden, InShik suggested the elementary school gardens and the water tower. She will follow up. She will most likely offer programs on M, T, W. Linda shared copies of the 2003 program managers' annual reports, She also distributed copies of the CCE Dryden budget for'04, anticipating summer program fees to balance the budget. She discussed the March 15 Showcase to be held at CCE at 7pm. It will be a great opportunity to meet new director Ken Schlather, learn about RYS programs offered throughout the county and network with commission members from other communities. Kris suggested that the Showcase take the place of the regularly scheduled Mar. DYC meeting, all agreed to this. Kris will notify Walt and Alan. InShik will invite Tom Lyson, Nita will invite Steve Trumbull, Eric will invite Mike Lane, Linda also said that program advertising is done primarily through the school bulletin and reminded the group that they received a grant at the end of the year from NYSEG to run an ad in the Shopper and discussed when would be the best time to do this: perhaps for summer programs or for fall. Dave said bad weather has forced cancellation of several program sessions this winter. Recently 8 youth, 4 adults and 2 dogs participated in a winter Primitive Pursuits overnight that was very successful. The only teen helper he has at this time is Lily who's helping with Primitives. He is planning some coordinated activities with Enfield for the spring. He is considering offering CPR and first aid classes in the spring to assist interested youth in getting summer camp jobs. Other ideas: something with PRIIMuseum of the Earth; outdoor animals, teen challenge (2 teams). DYC members had a couple suggestions for future programs: a "boys group" to balance the "girls group." (Dave said his experience is that there has to be a focus of some sort to draw the boys in, perhaps computers or technology. Also could do a session on tv production at Pegasys community access tv; suggest he connect with Bob Edgecomb, school board member who owns a local computer business; possibly a HS Serateen volunteer might help with this. Dryden Rec. Kris had spoken with Jennifer Glaab recently. Jennifer said Tracy has just been appointed to the Rec. Commission. TC3 offered the loan of 6 canoes to the Rec. program for the summer, Jennifer wants to make sure summer programs know about their availability. Jennifer shared copies of her 2003 Rec. annual report. The Rec. Commission is hoping to get the Wall St, ballfields ready this spring; they need dirt and some additional work. The RC is raising money /donations for fields, bleachers and fencing, ® Jennifer said she could be a resource to area camps for some initial training. hiew Programs. Summer Planning K(is has tried unsuooessfuIIy to reach Jean for an update on Finding Our Strength, Finding Our Voices. Jean volunteered to be the liaison to this new program due to start thi r s spring, Kristen reported that Jean called her to say she has not yet reached the program coordinators but she'll keep trying. Dave and Linda have not heard anything from FOS FOV, they could help advertise and recruit. Kris will follow up. Inhik agreed to be the liaison to the Coddingtion CIT program and will contact them soon. The V. Dryden Rec. Pmgram will be hiring a new director for this summer, last year's is not returning.
