HomeMy WebLinkAbout2000-10-17® Dryden Youth Commission Minutes October 17, 2000 Attendees- Penny Green, Jean Simmons, Anita Baldwin, Dave Hall, Kristen Blackman, Tracy Kurtz, Walt Matyjas, Karen Coleman, Monica Bostwick Absent — Mary Bachner Meeting Called to order by Penny Green Outing Program presentation- Monica. Monica has worked with the Dryden program for several years and for three years has partnered with Dave. There are three goals for the program. 1) Have fun 2) Support and develop social skills 3) Personal responsibility. Monica showed slides that gave an idea of the range of activities the kids participate in; hiking, camping, canoe trips, climbing, zip lines. Each participant and parent/guardian signs a participant responsibilities agreement. Each week participants and staff fill out a self assessment for the days activities. This year have started with a group assessment for the day and will begin using individual assessments later. Recruitment for this program are primarily the responsibility of the Program Manager, Dave, and the group is usually a combination of previous participants, new mixed age youth, target youth who have not joined other activities at the school. Discussed the possibility of 2 groups, 1 younger 1- older, this could be done if greater finical resources. It is usually a matter of time before all of the youth come prepared for the daily activities. No youth is left out because they do not have appropriate equipment as the Ithaca Youth Bureau can provide all of these things. Most Dryden youth come prepared and have access to the things they need. Budget Discussion — Karen Recommended Budget has been officially submitted, have had no questions or response. Vote on this in mid November. Club Dryden money was dropped from the budget only as far as no United Way funds so did not have to put as a special program. This can be a part of the Co -op Extension summer program budget, if the Commission wishes. Teen Program Report — Dave Dave handed out the current program information. See attached. Discussed possible new programs- student suggestions will be followed up with. Most will be implemented in some way. Dave was asked if the Outing youth were the same ones interested in Primitive Pursuits, very few are the same only 3 out of 12 participate in the Outings program. Upcoming events, a white water rafting trip with the Trumansburg teen ® group, video production with Channel 7 staff, and cooking program. Will begin leading some in school teen discussion groups during the school day. Topics will be decided on by a team consisting of guidance department, teachers, youth and Dave. Memberships We are still looking for a Village of Dryden representative. Tracy Kurtz is resigning her position in December 2000 so we will also need a new Town representative. The Commission discussed attending or updating Town and Village boards about the Commission activities /programs. To keep informed as well as to publicize the Commission's role. Monitoring Visit- Walt Observed the Teen program activity at the Patchwork Riding Stables. This was a good program, kids were focused, learned about horse care, and riding skills. The program was well supervised, controlled and safe. The stables / staff were well set up for this activity. November Agenda — Goals Membership DYC Minutes Page Two October 17, 2000
