HomeMy WebLinkAbout2000-06-20Dryden Youth Commission Minutes June 20, 2000 Present: Jean Simmons, Amanda Verba, Marie Holl, Karen Coleman, Walt Matyjas, Mary Bachner, Nita Baldwin, David Hall, Tracy Kurtz, Mark Varvayanis, Town Supervisor Absent: Kristen Blackman Meeting called to order at 7:10 p.m. Minutes okayed. Moved by Jean, seconded by Tracy. Approved. Dave reported on programs finished and on -going programs. Summer Skies filling up nicely, 7 -8 each so far. Youth Conservation Corp may work for DCS. Marie — Club Dryden has hired 5 students, 4 of which were recommended by Laszlo /Bossack. Need to schedule a meeting for Wednesday evening. Band for first event. Collecting names and phone numbers for a calling list. May arrange a baseball game trip. Members suggested that Marie (group) send information to Mayor and Police to let them know when and what events are happening. Chuck is finding (10) jobs in babysitting /gardening requests increased after workshop in ® the Fall. Look for more work shops in late July, for example, Green thumb, super sitters, & general job skills. Amanda — Budget spending is low because we no longer have a part-time youth worker. Dave suggests spending funds for special activities that would challenge his ongoing group. High ropes course, rafting at Pine Creek. Overnights at the Most in Syracuse, primitive pursuits, dog training, woodworking, black smithing with Durand, Earth arts Commission will discuss this at next month's meeting when they look at program priorities for 2001. County Youth Bureau has $6,900 for transportation. Janice and Karen have proposed that this money be used to lease a 15- passenger van for 3 years. Funds can be used to lease, pay for routine upkeep, insurance and programs will be charged 32.5 cents per mile for use. This will help pay for 2 "d year in addition they will propose to the TCYB a small amount be paid to cover year two. Primarily for use by Rural Youth Managers to transport to 8 programs. This will be voted on at the Monday TCYB meeting. In a discussion about the drop in program with Bonnie Hill (via E mail) Bonnie believes that the kids enjoy and drop in for large activities, swim, skating and unusual activites but are not really interested in weekly drop in. However the parents are, Karen suggested that we consider a one month activity to prepare youth to stay at home alone. Such as; "Survival course" — 4 week course to stay alone. ® "Self Sufficiency" — to help kids prepare for self care. Tracy notified the commission that the high school after graduation party did not need the $100. Offered by the Youth Commission. Penny moved to revoke funds allocated to Dryden High School graduation party. Mary seconded. All in favor. Karen will write a letter informing the Town Board of this decision. 2001 Goals Need to reach homeschool populations.
