HomeMy WebLinkAbout2000-03-210 Dryden Youth Commission March 21, 2000 Present: Penny Green, Dan Klein, Dave Hall, Tracy Kurtz, Nita Baldwin, Kristen Blackman, Mary Bachner, Karen Coleman Absent: Walter Matyjas, Jean Simmons Margaret not able to be here tonight will be here in April. Wants to expand Jr. Police Academy. Minutes approved. David passed out activities report. A small group of youth will spend an overnight at the Robinson Museum they will go with Trumansburg youth program. Archery was very successful — may offer an advanced course over the summer. Cooking — inviting parents, 4:15 Tuesday April 28 . Primitive Pursuits club going well trying to recruit more girls. Proposed Summer Program — will use Varna Community Center and Freeville, wants to try Etna Community Center for two week programs at each site. Summer programs will take place in the morning a start after July 4th for six weeks. Summer - $15 /week if need be free Dave needs assistant — we have plenty of money to hire. Summer Afternoons Maria Holl who is currently working through Ameri corp at the Dryden middle school has expressed interest in working with our program for the summer. She has approximately 30 hours a week. Is interested in Club Dryden and would like to do something with drama. Karen will pursue Maria. Tidbits has offered to print our calendar and it should be published soon in paper. Next step (maybe) a WEB page. Dan Klein announce that he is continuing as Asst. Program Coordinator, going to part time for 6 -12 months and a full -time Coordinator has been hired on a temporary basis for the same time period. Cornell cooperative Extension will use this time to determine what will work within their agency. Chuck Leo — Youth employment project - is recruiting businesses and residents who have jobs for youth and then will recruit youth to interview for these position. He will be doing recruiting in a variety of ways. Karen spoke with Allen Green in regards to the IYB Conservation Corp It is time to look for projects in the community. The Program managers help with recruitment, most likely this will be Chuck. At this point there are no specific projects but Freeville has been interested in a playground at Groton Park. Allen will follow up on this. Karen and Allen will be working on this. Karen has set a meeting with Mark Varvayanis to talk about the Youth Commission, a bit of it's history, current projects , an revenue increase of $529. And the Conservation Corp, projects. Meeting scheduled for March 22. Dryden ASCC has 35 middle school kids skating on 3/14 and the elementary kids (100) are skating for 4 weeks. Karen had a brief meeting with Doug Robertson re: the Youth services money available for the county and his program. Doug is willing to work with the Commission to create a more focused Youth Development program with the funds allocated for the Police and Community project. Tracy discussed the attempt to pull together an after graduation party this year. This seems like a positive thing for the kids and the community. May be too late for this year. But will let us know how things are developing. Could use Club Dryden money ? No new business Old Business: April — Margaret will be here.
