Medical Waste Collection – Ed Gottlieb Ed updated the board on the progress of the upcoming Pharmaceutical Collection Day which is scheduled for Saturday, March 6, 2010. He noted all of the different agencies who are involved and explained what can and can’t be collected and disposed of. A commercial inventory system will be used to track what is collected. Volunteer help is gratefully accepted. Local pharmacists and police will be supervising and monitoring the whole process. Medical facilities are regulated separately and are not included in this collection. They are legally able to flush their waste which can be problematic to the environment. Financial Report – Steve Thayer Steve distributed the current financial activity for the past month and the preliminary 2009 year end activity. The first quarter payment for 2010 has been received by the City of Ithaca and the Town of Ithaca. A reminder notice has been sent to the Town of Dryden. The revenues for 2010 exceed expenses by $558,000 noting that it’s still early in the year. We are still posting activity for 2009 and we should have final numbers for the March meeting. Currently, revenues exceed expenses by $361,000. There was no capital activity for the past month to note. 1 2 There were two payments made to the outside law firm that we retained for the First Energy lawsuit. The payments amount to $6,146 through December 31, 2009. The next phase includes depositions to be given in Syracuse by Bill Gray as to what the land has been used for since it was owned by the IAWWTF. Bill explained that he will be taking Dan Ramer and Larry Fabbroni with him to tap their memories and technical expertise. There will be more costs associated with this phase. Engineering/Operations Report Summary – Dan Ramer and Scott Gibson Johnson Control and IAWWTF are preparing a proposal for a NYSERDA grant ($500,000 limit) for the Energy Reduction project to include non-process improvements within the project. The Town of Ithaca will act as lead agency because the City is applying for the same grant for different projects. Approval for matching funds of 15 – 20% ($80,000) is requested to help ensure that we receive the grant. The SJC endorsed the concept behind the grant application and gave their approval to apply for the grant. IAWWTF staff is working with the Town of Ithaca and City of Ithaca staff in a joint effort to upgrade the monitoring stations. Monitoring stations are located where the Town borders the City and they are used to apportion the billing charges and usage. Trainees Jeremy Giordano and Jim Goodreau have completed their coursework at SUNY Morrisville. Over the next year, three of our trainees will qualify to take the exam to become operators. Staff is working with manufacturers to resolve equipment problems within the Actiflow system. We are still waiting for data from the Cornell Vet school so that the MAHL (maximum allowable headworks loading) study can be finalized. Litigation Updates - Coal Tar - Requested documents (copies) and photo albums have been delivered to the attorneys in Syracuse, NY. On a motion, the meeting adjourned. The next meeting is scheduled for March 10, 2010 at 12:30PM.
