Meeting was called to order at 6:06pm
Chair Jackson welcomed new Commissioner Robert Cantelmo.
Commissioner Cantelmo introduced himself to the Commission and described his
background in civic engagement with emerging democracies in the Middle East.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES:
Approval of the December 3, 2018 Public Safety & Information Commission

RESOLVED, That the minutes of the December 3, 2018 Public Safety & Information
Commission meeting be approved as published.
Carried Unanimously
Chair Jackson welcomed a large audience of Ithaca High School students to the
meeting, they were invited to participate in the discussion planned around Social Media
Policy.
Commons:
Follow up: Dogs on the Commons research. Commissioners Segerson and Comella
reported that they are still researching the matter of dogs on the Commons.
Chair Jackson reviewed the new workflow process regarding Commissions and City
Boards and/ or Staff and projects assigned.
Comella stated that they would like to involve the DIA in the process of data gathering,
asking them to research businesses and their take on the topic.
The Commissioners held a discussion on how to best take on this process balancing

research and community involvement in an respectful and effective manner.
Chair Jackson requested documentation of what research we have so far and stated
that she will open a dialog with the City Administration Committee regarding this topic.
Public Information:
The Commissioners discussed the city’s existing Social Media Policy and shared notes
via Google docs. Goals for the revamp of the policy were discussed as outlined by City
Clerk Conley-Holcomb and Public Information Specialist Faraday. Up for review and
possible rewriting are topics of clarifying archiving process, creating policy language
that will not become out of date as trends in social media use evolve, roles of
administrators of social media sites and their training, best practices as laid out by oth er
municipalities and/ or New York State, protocol for removal of offensive posts, and
Facebook’s archiving process.
Common Council liaisons Gearhart and Smith expressed their opinion on the benefits of
enhancing social media presence for municipalities a nd stated that they hope the city
can move this process forward via the presence of the Public Information Specialist and
a trend towards more engaging content.
The audience of students shared their opinions on social media and how they engage
with it.

The next meeting is scheduled for Monday, February 4, 2018
