ITHACA, NY 14850 607-272-1713 REGULAR MEETING MINUTES THURSDAY, MARCH 15, 1984 CITY HALL 3rd FLOOR CONFERENCE ROOM PRESENT: Doug Dylla, Harold Jones, Robert Snell, Jeanne Fudala, Joseph Laquarta, Bea Brownell, Gerard Messmer, James Holway, and Staff Liaison John Clynes. The meeting was called to order by Doug Dylla. Doug Dylla welcomed new member Bea Brownell. APPROVAL OF MINUTES: The minutes were accepted as rendered. CORRESPONDENCE: None. ANNOUNCEMENTS: None. Doug Dylla introduced two representatives from Kaman Bearing and Supply Corp. They showed a slide presentation on energy efficiency in electric motors by Reliance El- ectric. By increasing the core material they have reduced loss through the motor. Use of better grade silicon steel also increases efficiency by reducing losses. Larger diameter copper wire in the windings reduces resistance to flow. These improvements do add to the cost but the savings in consumption created a quick payback, generally around two years (10-40 H.P. ) . Bob Snell mentioned an actual application at Cornell where the payback was less than three years for a retrofit project. Rewinding techniques can also reduce the efficiency of the original motor and should be scrutinized. It was pointed out that the real "candidates" for energy efficient motors are the ones having nearly continuous use. It was suggested that the City look at a couple of older motors with possible re- placement in mind. COMMITTEE REPORTS: Target Applications: Bob Snell announced he would schedule a "walk through" of No 9's Station and also Southside Community Center. Incentives: Harold Jones reported that next miser would probably be named in April and showed two framed recent awards. Multiple Family Dwellings: The committee met in a brainstorming session. They "An Equal Opportunity Employer with an Affirmative Action Program" Page 2 Multiple Family Dwellings continued: will address three areas of concern: 1. Incentives to Landlord 2. Tenant Awareness 3. Mention was made that other committees approach No. 1 (above) from a penalty basis for non-compliance. Tightening existing codes might help (such as Cornell not listing locations with violations) . It was recommended that landlords be sought for advice and that Tom Hoard be in- vited to the next Energy Commission meeting. Owner-occupied multiple units were mentioned as a specific target area. A motion by Jeanne Fudala, seconded by Harold Jones, that Council be requested to provide $5,000.00 from the capital fund to go toward quick-fix purchases CARRIED unanimou sly. A motion by Jeanne Fudala and seconded by Bob Snell that if the above was approved, that the window foam be purchased for No. 9's. CARRIED.
