HomeMy WebLinkAboutMN-PSI-2018-10-01 PUBLIC SAFETY AND INFORMATION COMMISSION MINUTES PRESENT: Chair Jackson Commissioners (5) Comella, Contraccia, Segerson, McLaurin, Holmes, Spadolini OTHERS PRESENT: Common Council Liaisons: Gearhart, Smith Chief of Staff Cogan Fire Chief Parsons Police Chief Tyler Police Deputy Chief Nayor City Clerk Conley Holcomb Public Information Specialist Faraday EXCUSED: ABSENT: Hayton Meeting was called to order at 6:04pm APPROVAL OF MINUTES: Approval of the September 3, 2018 Public Safety & Information Commission Minutes By Commissioner Comella: Seconded by Commissioner Holmes RESOLVED, That the minutes of the September 3, 2018 Public Safety & Information Commission meeting be approved as published. Carried Unanimously Public Safety/ Information: Police Chief Tyler gave an overview of the services provided by the Ithaca Police Department and welcomed the Commissioners to ask any questions that they may have about the IPD. New Deputy Chief Dennis Nayor was introduced. The Commissioners asked what the Chief would like to see in place in terms of Gorge safety, his response was to favor a system that had support outside of regular IPD patrol. Date: October 1, 2018 Time: 6:00 PM Location: Common Council Chambers, 3rd Floor, City Hall Public Safety and Information Commission October 1, 2018 2 The Chief stated that more staffing would permit the force to work “proactively” rather than “reactively”. A question and answer period followed between the Commissioners and Chief Tyler. Topics discussed included active shooter scenario preparedness, Citizen’s Police Academy, the history of the presence of SWAT and CINT in Ithaca, the future of LEAD, and Dogs on the Commons. Presentation: City Budget Overview: Chief of Staff Dan Cogan gave a presentation about the 2019 City of Ithaca Budget. A brief question and answer period followed. Slides for the presentation are available upon request. A discussion between the Commissioners followed regarding Lime Scooters and their possible presence in the city of Ithaca. The PSIC will keep a watch on this topic as Spring approaches, which has been stated as a possible time for a Lime Scooter trial to take place in the city. NEXT MEETING: The next meeting is scheduled for Monday, November 5, 2018 ADJOURNMENT: On a motion, the meeting was adjourned at 8:27 pm.
