Public Art:
Women in Nature - Meghan – Public Art – Seneca St parking garage – stairwell –
Women in Nature – This was sent out for public comment, to city staff and downtown
Ithaca alliance and all commissions, Common Council and Public works. Meghan
handed out a list of the public comments to CLC Members. The CLC had originally
made a recommendation for the Women in Nature mural and after public comments
discussed, CLC would like to make suggestion of changes to piece: body image; more
diversity; hesitancy of diversity. CLC asked that artists come and speak to us about
their view of their piece or via email explaining or agreeing different mock-up of people
in painting – Back on Agenda for August
Diverted Flight – This art submission was emailed to members and handout and slide
show also shown. There were location suggestions and CLC wanted to know if the
Artist is open to suggestions? The artist placement recommendation is on back of the
Green Street Parking Garage. This is an interactive art piece, and suggestions were to
have more room for public to be able to take photos. CLC asked that we see other
cities that have interactive art and there was some questions regarding whether this
might be seen as religious?, and if so, can this be put on city property. CLC asked for
more information regarding interactive art and more info from this particular artist,
including seeing her portfolio. It was also suggested that this kind of interactive art me
at a more visible location so that it would be more readily seen and used. Meghan
asked members to please send her photographs of any location suggestions that CLC
would like to see.
Ithaca Youth Council Ambassadors - Beverly Stokes YES Coordinator and Emily
Moss as well as two of Youth Ambassadors – introductions were made of themselves to
the Commission. They read their Mission Statement and advised there are currently 9
members; they meet once a week for two hours. Most recent project was March for Our
Lives (in response to FL shooting) – they wrote an article, made up stickers and did a
survey – 320 students were surveyed (all Ithaca high students) 75% participated in
walk-out and 10% wanted to, but couldn’t. The Tattler Article was passed around as
well as the stickers. They showed a video that they made to CLC members. They
answered questions from CLC members and advised of other projects they are working
on currently as well as how they come up with projects and Emily Moss advised that
they meet in the spring semester and brainstorm ideas. Currently they are on break
and will be back in the Fall. Members ask them what CLC can do to support them.

PROJECT TITLE: DIVERTED FLIGHT
Description
I’m proposing a painted set of unmatched wings that are designed for interactive use.
The 6 feet wide painting will be anatomically placed on a wall in an accessible location.
Pedestrians will be encouraged to stand in front of the painting for photos, embracing the wings
as their own. The piece will incorporate two different wings. The first will be a feathered wing
representing an angel, the other will be a fleshy horned wing representing a demon.
Over the past few years, aided by social media, art projects that lend themselves to
photographers, have steadily grown in popularity. Similar wing backdrops have popped up in
cities across the globe. I believe the interactive aspect encourages viewers to stop and fully
appreciate the art available to them in public spaces.
Artist(s) Bio
My name is Tyndale Parseghian, I’m an Ithaca native, 2014 Ithaca College alumni, and life long
amateur artist. I’ve painted on canvas for years, and am currently looking to utilize new
mediums. I will be assisted on the project by my sister, Lexa Parseghian. Together, we’d both
cherish the opportunity to give back to our community by enriching it with unique artwork.
Cost/Material
The project will be self-financed. We will hand paint with quality acrylics.
Location
To be determined.
Below is a draft of the proposed artwork. Thanks for your consideration.

Mural Proposal: “Women in Nature” by Jessica Harron and Megan Parker
Public Comments through July 16, 2018
“I think this will look great. Thank you for your work on this wonderful endeavor.”
Jamie Williamson
Ithaca Police Department
“The resolution of the mural image is low, and two figures seem unfinished, but it appears that all
but one of the women shown is young, white, has a build that meets the unrealistic expectations
of our current society, and none have a child in their arms. They all could have been clipped from a
fashion magazine. Please do not authorize the public placement of this mural!”
Ed Gottlieb
“I think the proposed mural is beautiful. The bright, vivid colors will brighten up the stairwell. The
content is thought provoking.”
Janet M. Olsen
“Love it! Lots of color - great concept!”
Deborah Grunder
“Very interesting idea. I would approve.”
Tom Shelley
Thank you for the opportunity to comment on the mural proposal.
The artists are clearly talented and have a unique vision and voice to share. I would enjoy seeing
their work in the City and hope that opportunities are available to them.
But ...
I admit I am more inspired by their portfolio of work than by the image proposed.
Rather than the impression of women emerging, I got the impression of women hidden or
overwhelmed by the vibrancy and color around them -- clearly the opposite of what they were
intending to portray.
Of course, I understand that this is just a draft, and the final will vary from their submission. I
wanted to share my first impression, if it helps to inform the Commission (and artists) in their
decision.
