INTERRELATIONSHIP OF BUILDING AND SURROUNDINGS: The structure occupies a prominent (Indicate if building or structure is in an historic district) site at the junction of the Jacksonville Road and New York State -Route 96, fronting the Jacksonville Road. The grounds in front are covered with asphalt extending from the building to the road. The broad parking lot and the building's low scale contrast with the predominantly residential streetscape at the center of the hamlet. 18. The two window openi-ngs flank either side of the main entrance. A garage door is Located at the north side of the west wall. SIGNIFICANCE 19. DATE OF INITIALCONSTRUCTION: early 196Q; f ARCHITECT: BUILDER: 0. HISTORICAL AND ARCHITECTURAL IMPORTANCE: The deed describes the property as part of the land "known as the old Tavern lot." Additional research corroberates thr the. Mattison Tavern;(no Longer extant) occupied the site diagonally across New "New York State Route 96 and'the Jacksonville Road.'See attached sheet for deed "research. �Gsite The centrally located has -served a variety of uses. The 1866 map depicts a structure fronting the present New York State Route 96, called the -Tin Shop. .Local historian Nancy Dean speaks of a bean thellin'enterprise-operating from a house on the site, although the date is unspecified. TH E AI I,: m On 2/i4/184o, Egbert Burr purchased the property from the trustees of the Methodist Episcopal Church, named as Horace Cooper, Elisha Wilcox, Thomas Gibb and Stephen Mandeville, (book NN, page 318). Burr conveyed the deed to Elisha Wilcox on 4/l/1857, (book 67, page 112). On 9/21/1877 Lovinia Lee purchased the property from J.J.Ayers Durling,(book 4, page 310). On 12/18/1912 Edwin S. Johnson purchased the property from David B. Stewart, (book 178, page 552). Johnson conveyed the deed to John E. Stevenson 10/1.8/1924, (book 207, page 503) and it was subsequently conveyed to Edythe Stevenson, (book 246, gape 259). Early photographs depict a gas station on the site. Deed references indicate the like- lihood that the station and an accompanying residence were built at this time. fitevenson conveyel the deed to Cynthia Sr_yder, 12/7./1937, (book 249, page 226). Snvder conveyed the deed to Ai Laron on 11/2.9/1933, (book 252, page 119). The deed makes reference to a gas and oil business on the property when Lyon aquired it. Lyon conveyed the deed to William B. & Sarah Wilkinson, 10/23/1040. (boob: 277, pare 53?)
