Historic Resource Inventory Form - Continuation Sheet Address: 1858 Trumansburg Road Village/Hamlet: Jacksonville Narrative Description of Property The two-story gable -end building is angled on the southwestern corner of Trumansburg Road (Route 96) and Jacksonville Road. The main block of the building reflects the scale, size and massing typical for the Greek Revival Period, and was constructed ca. 1840. Numerous changes to windows, vinyl siding, and possibly multiple additions has obscured any aesthetic details typical for the style. The main (eastern) elevation features a central recessed entrance flanked by two plate glass windows. A pair of wooden doors each contain two panes of glass with rounded corners, and the two lights over the door reflect the same form. Concrete steps lead from the ground to the doorway. On the second story, two double -hung wooden sash with 6/6 lights frame a "picture window." A projection extends from the peak of the roof, which once contained a pulley system, reflecting the building's historically commercial past. The entire building, including the additions, is clad in white vinyl. The roof is clad in asphalt shingles. The siding obscures evidence of construction stages or additions. The rear, southern portion of the building is likely original. On the eastern and western facades are similar in configuration, with irregularly spaced windows tucked underneath the eaves of the roof. A single entrance door is at the western corner of the south facade, and a cinderblock chimney with a terracotta cap bifurcates the fagade. A brick chimney is centered on the gable -end of the western fagade. A narrow, projecting two-story addition with gabled roof was constructed to provide a staircase and is accessible via an eastern mid -20th century door with a cross- hatched light configuration. Historic Resource Inventory Form - Continuation Sheet Address: 1858 Trumansburg Road Village/Hamlet: Jacksonville Narrative Description of Property (continued) There does not appear to have been any exterior investment in the property since the 1984 historic survey. The building appears to have been vacant for a number of years. The asphalt shingle roof is past the end of its life, and partial roof collapse around the chimney on the south fagade, presumably due to water incursion, poses the most significant threat to the future of the structure. Narrative Description of Significance The intersection of Trumansburg Road and Jacksonville Road has the strongest commercial ties in the hamlet. The building first appears on the 1852 Map of Tompkins County as Gutes Store, and labeled "Mattison and Loomis" on the 1866 New Topographical Atlas of Tompkins County. Cornelius C. Mattison and George W. Loomis bought the property from William and Antoinette A. Pierson and Arthur M. and Martha Holman in 1858 or 1860 (Book 67, Page 160 or Book 1, page 46). At an unknown point the property was sold to Isaac Kerst, whose son, John Kerst, ran the store and resided in the Greek Revival house at 592 Jacksonville Road. (Exact contemporary address is unknown due to changes in the street numbers post -1984.) John Kerst purchased the store at auction from his father's estate on July 12, 1897. Edwin S. Johnson took over the store from Kerst in 1899. He lived in the Greek Revival house at 596 Jacksonville Road. (Exact contemporary address is unknown due to street number changes post -1983.) Moe's National Brands was the last general store operating in the building, and in property was subdivided into two residential units likely after it was sold to the Casciottis in 1970.
