Stay healthy and safe, Carol Baker, President, Enfield Valley Grange U.S. Presidential Elections in the Town of Enfield Election results for the Town can be found on laserfiche site for Enfield, www.townofenfield.org. Sue Thompson, Enfield Town Historian. This article is based on the 21 times that the Town of Enfield voted, as did Tompkins County and the nation, to vote in winning U.S. Presidents. Six of the voting times were democratic winners the rest were republicans. Where did the town rent for voting through the years? In the presidential election of 1864 where the town voted for Abraham Lincoln, at the hotel of Elizabeth and Aaron VanMarter (M.L Harvey/ Frank Teeter) (186 Enfield Main Road). Voting took place at the hotel until 1887 when the John Wortman Hall (201 Enfield Main Road) (Charles Wright/John Wortman/McFall/Newhart Store) was rented. In 1888 elections were held at Wortman Hall where Benjamin Harrison was voted in. 1890 the town was renting both (continued on next page) Enfield Community Library In the Enfield Community Center We’ve been enjoying the books the Tompkins County Public Library lends to us to lend to you—have you checked them out? In July we chose from the New York Times “Readers Pick Their 100 Best Books of the 21st Century,” and were surprised to find we already had 51 of the 100 on our shelves. So we borrowed 18 more! A few: from Cormac McCarthy,The Road; from Irish novelist Sally Rooney, Normal People; from Susanna Clarke, a fantasy, Piranesi; from Native American Tommy Orange, There There, a novel culminating in a powwow; from Jesmyn Ward, Sing, Unburied, Sing, set in rural Mississippi; and from Nobel prize winner Kazuo Ishiguro, Klara and the Sun. We’ll have these and more until January—look for them on the cart just inside the library door. In August we chose Romance: summer romance, Regency romance, romance based on classical myth, teen romance, paranormal romance, even Joyce Carol Oates romance! Just a few to tempt: from Caro de Robertis, a retelling of the myth of Psyche and Eros,The Palace of Eros; from paranormal romance master Nalini Singh, Resonance Surge; from Bridgerton creator Julia Quinn (and three other authors) a collection of four novellas, Lady Whistledown Strikes Back; from Nancy Allen, a proper romance,To Capture His Heart; from Elin Hilderbrand, Here’s to Us; and a just published novel, A Great Marriage, from Frances Mayes, author of Under the Tuscan Sun. These will be on our cart until February. In September we’ll choose children’s books—we’re informed by young experts that Chi’s Sweet Home, by Konami Kanata is very good, and hope to find it, plus more Mo Willems. The Enfield Community Library is open Sundays 1:00 to 4:00 PM, Tuesdays and Thursdays 3:30 to 6:30 PM, and Saturdays 9 AM to noon. Come visit us! Submitted by Barbara Sadovnic Wortman Hall and M.L. Harvey Hotel. This is where in 1904 Theodore Roosevelt was voted in. On November 6, 1917 NY State passed the suffrage amendment to allow women to vote. The Ithaca Journal reported 9,000 women were eligible to vote in Tompkins county. In McFall Hall and Fitchpatrick Hall, Enfield voted yes 140 no 116 on the suffrage amendment. Fitchpatrick Hall was located on the corner of Enfield Main and Enfield Center, building was a blacksmith shop and Post Office. The 19th amendment to the U.S. constitution passed congress June 1919 and was ratified in August 1920. That November women went to the polls in the national presidential election. For the first time in Enfield there were 86 women registered to vote: 23 Prohibition, 44 Democratic, 8 Republican, and 11 left blank. Warden Harding won the elections which were held in Teeter Hall and Fitchpatrick Hall. In September of 1923 the town bought a building called the “Pig’s Ear” to use for town business and voting location. This building was located on Enfield Main Road, across from the current Town Hall (168 Enfield Main Road). In November 1924 polling locations were the new Town Hall and Fitchpatrick Hall, Calvin Coolidge was voted in. In 1930 the town went back to McFall’s Hall and the Town Hall for voting. In 1937 the town purchased Automatic Voting Machines from Jamestown, New York. The first presidential election held using these voting machines was that of elected Franklin Roosevelt. Voting was held at Town Hall and McFall’s Hall. In 1952 the town moved from Newhart’s Hall to the Enfield Volunteer Fire Company Hall (182 Enfield Main Road) and the Town Hall. Dwight Eisenhower was voted in that year. This was also the first time a president was voted in under the terms of the 22nd amendment establishing two term limits for presidents. It was in the Fire Hall and Town Hall where Eisenhower (1956) and Johnson (1964) were voted in. Enfield’s “new” Town Hall was built (168 Enfield Main Road) in 1966. Voting then went to the Fire Hall and the “new” Town Hall. Richard Nixon was voted in, 1972. In 1973 both districts moved to the Town Hall for voting where Reagan (1980 and 1984) was voted in. In 1986 districts split back to the Fire Hall and Town Hall. In 1994 both districts went to the Enfield Community Building (old Fire Hall) Clinton (1996), and Bush (2000) were voted in. In 2006 the polling location was moved to the Enfield Elementary School voting in Barack Obama. This location was used through 2010. In 2011 the voting location was moved to the Enfield Volunteer Fire Company, 172 Enfield Main Road, where in 2012 Barack Obama was voted in. In 2017 voting was moved to the Enfield Highway Facility (475 Enfield Main Road). In 2018 voting was moved to the Enfield Community Council building, 162 Enfield Main Road) and in 2020 Joe Biden was voted in. The goal is to highlight the experience of a broad range of people who grew up in Enfield or moved to Enfield as adults. Vera Howe-Strait is a well-known person in Enfield, having cared for our children in various capacities for 24 years. She ran the Enfield Community Council (ECC) summer camp and the Enfield School Age Program. She retired in 2022, but still serves as Treasurer of the Enfield Community Council and volunteers at community events. Vera, born and raised in Queens, New York, learned the importance of community service from her mother. Her parents met in Italy during World War II, married and moved to an Italian neighborhood in Queens. Her mother, a teacher in Italy before the war, tutored recent immigrants in English and was active in the PTA for many years. Growing up, Vera was exposed to two different environments- New York City, with all its ethnic diversity- afforded Vera the opportunity to be exposed to many cultures, music and museums in New York City. Her family also had a house on Long Island, two hours from Manhattan, where she spent summers free to explore outside on the beach and in nature. She learned how to be responsible for herself and her friends. Growing up in these two worlds helped shape who Vera is today. Vera went to Queens College after high school and finished at Syracuse University with a degree in Education. She moved to Enfield because her parents and sister lived in Ithaca. She met her husband, Steve Strait, who was raised in Enfield. Steve introduced her to hiking and camping, which she enjoys to this day. After living in Virginia for 8 years, they moved back to Enfield in 1998 to raise their two children, Austen and Samantha here. The whole family enjoyed hiking and camping. The children learned about community service by volunteering at the Harvest Festival as a family. Tragedy struck when Vera lost her daughter, Samantha at age 23 and then her husband a year later. Nature is solace to Vera, and she is looking forward to venturing out with a friend on a two-month hike on the Finger Lakes trail this summer. When asked about her hopes for Enfield, Vera said she would like to see more community gatherings to bring people together. She enjoys the Saturday Cafés (where they serve full breakfasts) and the Friday night dinners, which she encourages everyone to attend. These events are a perfect opportunity to linger over a meal while visiting with friends and neighbors. In the future Vera would love to have the children help run these events. She would like to widen the ECC program offerings for all ages and she would like to see more human services access available here for Enfield residents. The ECC has always wanted a building, and that dream was realized in 2021, when the ECC purchased a building of its own for the first time in its five-decade history. The building offers a home to the diverse programs that are now offered and opportunities for expansion. The Enfield community has much gratitude for the service Vera has provided over the years. 5 Regularly Scheduled Meetings& ActivitiesEnfield Community Council4th Thursday 5:15 PM at the Enfield community centerEnfield Valley Grange 3rd Wednesday 7:00 PM at the Grange Hall Enfield Town Board 2nd Wednesday at 6:30 PM Enfield Town Courthouse, 182 Enfield Main Road, upstairs Planning Board 1st Wednesday 7:00 PM Community Building, 182 Enfield Main Road, upstairs Enfield Volunteer Fire Company 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Thursdays member training 7:30 PM. The Town is in the process of doing a five year review of the Comprehensive Plan. The Planning Board has been reviewing the Comprehensive Plan and has the following observations. In general, the 2019 plan is a well-constructed document and is still a valid tool to guide the Town Board and Planning Board in maintaining and updating current town policies and regulations. The overview section of the plan should be updated with the data from the 2020 census for population and income. The eight sections of the Comprehensive Plan elements continue to be relevant for the Town of Enfield. The Planning Board has reviewed each section and the goals in each section are consistent with current activities in the town. The actions for each of the goals in each section should be reviewed and updated as some have been accomplished and others need to be addressed and some additional actions may be identified. The Comprehensive Plan Survey was very detailed, and the results and comments appear to be relevant to the current public opinion based on the comments from the public that have been received during public hearings for projects that have been reviewed by the Planning Board. The Planning Board recommends that the Comprehensive Plan be updated with an addendum that looks at the eight sections of the Comprehensive Plan and update the status of actions that have been completed and consider other goals and actions that need to be addressed in the Town. We encourage residents to read the current Comprehensive Plan which is available on the Town’s website. And is available in the Town Clerk’s office. To assist the Town in the Comprehensive Plan review we are seeking input from town residents and property owners for several areas of concern that have been expressed by residents regarding land use as the Planning Board has been reviewing subdivision and site plan proposals. The following questions are the most common and we would like your opinion: 1. Should the Town require a minimum lot size for subdivisions? 2. Is water supply a major concern for you? 3. Is stormwater management a major concern for you? Volunteers Needed for Repair Cafe Is it not unfortunate to see people buy new items to replace their old ones just because the old stuff broke? Even more so when the old stuff is a keepsake or something that has sentimental value. However, it can be expensive or a hassle to get the broken things repaired. We hope to offer this needed service in our local communities. The Cornell Cooperative Extension Tompkins County has been collaborating with local communities throughout the County on a waste reduction effort. The Towns of Dryden, Enfield, Newfield, and Ulysses would like to reduce waste by hosting repair cafes where people in the community can come in with broken items they would like fixed. We are looking for volunteers for our repair cafes who are be skilled in repairing the following items: Electronics Furniture Bicycles Clothing and anything else we missed here that you might know how to fix! If you are willing and able to volunteer, please fill out the survey on the Town of Enfield website. Trash Talks October 28th The Town of Enfield is excited to announce that we will be hosting Trash Talks on October 28th at 6pm, a lively discussion on recycling, reusing, and the circular economy. Featuring multiple expert speakers, this event will explore innovative ways to reduce waste and build a sustainable future. In addition to the informative discussions, we will also be hosting a used Halloween costume exchange and a reuse table. We encourage residents to bring gently used items to contribute to these activities. Don't miss out on this chance to learn, engage, and make a positive impact on the environment! Please Remember to bring your gently used Halloween costumes and/or gently used items for the reuse/free table to swap! NOTICE TO RESIDENTS OF THE TOWN OF ENFIELD Please be advised that the following propositions will be on the ballot for the general to be held on November 5, 2024: Proposition 1 – Whether the Town Supervisor term shall be two (2) or four (4) years, submitting Local Law Number 1 of 2024 to the electors of the Town of Enfield. Proposition 2 – Whether the Highway Superintendent term shall be two (2) or four (4) years, submitting Local Law Number 2 of 2024 to the electors of the Town of Enfield. Proposition 3 – Whether the Town Clerk term shall be two (2) or four (4) years, submitting Local Law Number 3 of 2024 to the electors of the Town of Enfield. Please take the time to review these propositions and make an informed decision when voting in the upcoming election. Your participation is crucial in shaping the future of our town.
