Community Police Board
City of Ithaca, NY
The Board met with Mayor Myrick in January. He lauded the efforts of the Ithaca
Police Department to improve community-police relations and talked about the
programs and outreaches that had been initiated. He also expressed his feelings as to
the mission of the Community Police Board. In February, Chief Barber attended the
meeting. He outlined the proposed Ithaca Plan to address increasing opiate abuse.
Tammy Baker who is the Community Outreach worker for the Commons and West End
attended the November meeting and discussed her job, goals and progress since the
initiation of the program.
Deputy Chief Monticello continues to attend meetings and provides regular
updates of police activities, initiatives and staffing. Alderman Kerslick also attends all of
our meetings. We continue to be most ably supported by Ithaca City support staffer
Cindie Day.
Board members also assisted Officer Doane with an educational research project
and attended the Ithaca Police Barbeque. Students from an Ithaca High School
government class are periodic visitors to our meetings.
The Board was pleased to have the opportunity to read thirty letters of
compliment addressed to Ithaca Police Department officers. These letters mentioned
the actions of fifty-one members of the department. The number and content of these
letters speaks well of the dedication and compassion of these officers.
The Board received and reviewed three complaints during the year. One of
these has been resolved, and the others are still under consideration.
The Board currently has an adult vacancy and another for the youth
commissioner position. Filling these vacancies is a priority for the Board as we must
have five members present to reach the quorum necessary for decision making.
