Present: Nina Bassuk, Laurene Gilbert, Jeanne Grace, Beverly Hillman, Pamela Markham, Paul Paradine,
Debra Statton, Keith Vanderhye
Forester’s Report: The crew has a few more stumps to grind in the Belle Sherman area. The order from
Klein has arrived ‐‐‐really early‐‐‐and the crew started planting some of it today: hackberry and
serviceberry as a buffer between golf course and Waterfront Trail. Also arrived are swamp white oak and
Aseculus glabra.
Jeanne emailed Seph Murtagh about getting our ordinance on the Planning and Economic
Development Committee agenda. After approval there, the changes can go to Common Council. Jeanne
will send us all the actual ordinance changes. These were sent to Lisa and JoAnn in February 2015 ‐‐‐it’s
been one year without any action.
The Arbor Day ceremony has been confirmed for April 29th. Beverly is trying to get Simon Wheeler
from the Journal to take pictures. Deb Mohlenhoff will do the Mayor’s proclamation. Jeanne will contact
John Graham , our DEC officer.
Jeanne is working with Dryden Beautification on an April 30th tree planting where Rte 13 goes left
in downtown Dryden.
Jeanne will get in touch with JoAnn about reminding Staples about the trees needing replacing in
that lot. Benderson are the owners, but the site manager thought trimming the trees was a good idea and
hired Morgan Landscaping who ruined them.
The tree lawn by Renovus is 8 feet wide. The owners want to do a good job.
Tree City USA Award ceremony report by Paul. Ithaca sent 4 of us: Paul, Laurene, Beverly, and Jeanne.
We got our 28th consecutive Growth Award. Cayuga Heights got Tree City for the 3rd year. It was
inspiring to see lots of hard‐working people doing good things. The Tree poster and Arbor Day posters
are both beautiful. There was an interesting report on the Arboretum in Vassar, and several other
interesting talks, and the food was awesome.
Nina started working on the iTree canopy study for Ithaca. It takes a lot of time, but she’s working on it.
Paul talked to Green Star about doing a xeriscape garden by the railroad tracks.
Keith will go see Greg Wilder at the Trust Company about cutting down the dying dawn redwoods. If he’s
given the go ahead, Keith can buy the trees and we’ll pay him to plant them. Still time this season.
Beverly reports that the crab apples to be planted along Floral Ave this fall include 7 Harvest Gold,
4 Prairie Fire, and 3 Royal Raindrops.
Next meeting Wed May 11, 2016 4pm Coop. Extension Minutes respectfully submitted by Debra Statton
