Public Art Bike Rack Project
Tom Knipe and Kelsey Gardner gave a thorough description of the project’s intent
and inspiration, and provided examples of similar projects in other cities. The bike
racks will be functional pieces of equipment that have unique designs and artistic
form (i.e. dog, buffalo, bicycle). Each rack is intended to secure two bicycles,
maybe three, and will be scattered through the downtown core in places where
bicyclists are most likely to want to secure a bicycle. Regarding exact location of
the racks, Tom and Kelsey are working with City Traffic Engineer Kent Johnson,
as well as the Bicycle Pedestrian Advisory Council (B-PAC). A private grant is
funding the project. A committee will be formed to select 15 winning entries and a
PAC member is desired on the committee. A First Friday gallery style event could
be organized to announce the winners, who will get cash prizes of $200. for
1st place, $100. for second, and $50. for each of the remaining 13 entries.
Approved - 12/22/16
The racks will then be donated to the City. The winning bike racks may be added
to the current supply, or possibly replace some older racks. It was suggested that a
logo be created to place on each rack, designating it as a bike rack vs. strictly
public art. General timeline: There will be a public call for bike rack designs, with
a deadline set early in 2017. The rack committee selects 15 winners. In April or
May, these go back to PAC for public comment and final approval. The First
Friday gallery style event is held and the 15 winning racks are in place by July.
Survey of Current Committee Practices
Those present answered as many questions as we were able. The results will be
sent to PAC to help fill in the three questions under Overall Feedback.
Updates:
Rainwater Art - none
More Boxes - none
Public survey - Caleb will design a survey to gather public input on what kinds
of public art projects people are interested in and what functions they might
serve (such as the traffic calming street mural). A draft of the survey will be
sent to PAC.
