The Data Entry Specialist exam is a performance test that measures data entry and keyboarding skills, and it is the skills that Civil Service Commission February 24, 2016 Page 2 are critical to successful job performance, not prior coursework or work experience. The minimum qualifications are proposed to read as follows: “MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma.” Commissioner Thompson made a motion to revise the minimum qualifications as proposed. Seconded by Commissioner Richardson. Motion carried 2-0. Revision of Minimum Qualifications: Office Assistant The Commission reviewed a proposed revision to the minimum qualifications for Office Assistant. The revision removes the requirement that qualifying work experience must specifically include experience using word-processing, spreadsheet or database software. The use of such software is now commonplace in our society, so there is no longer a need to require applicants to specifically detail it on their job applications. Additionally, the Office Assistant exam includes a performance test that measures applicant keyboarding skills. The minimum qualifications are proposed to read as follows: “MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Either: (a) Graduation from a regionally accredited college or university or one accredited by the New York State Board of Regents to grant degrees with an Associate’s degree in secretarial science, office management, office technology, business administration or a closely related field with similar course curriculum; or (b) Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and two (2) years of full-time paid clerical experience, or its part-time and/or volunteer equivalent; or (c) An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (a) and (b).” Commissioner Thompson made a motion to revise the minimum qualifications as proposed.
