Minutes from the Steering Committee meeting that was held on June 29,
1992 (4:20 - 5:35pm)
Present: Coordinator Alvin Nelson, Police Chief Harlin McEwen, Clay
Hamilton, Amy Lewis, Rick Williams, Irene Stein, Sara Shenk, Gerald
Dumay, n (visitor)

Absent: Mayor Ben Nichols, John Johnson
1.) Members were informed that we would be recording meetings, when
the recorder is available.
2.) Minutes from the 06/29/92 meeting were read by Renaye
Southworth. Changes and clearifications were noted. Revised copies
will be available to members.
Vote carried, minutes approved.
3.) Minutes from the Commentate Involvement Committee were read by
Amy Lewis.
a.) Alvin inquired about the voting procedures and Amy told
us that the majority gets the vote.
b.) Irene said that she thinks the elderly recommendations
are a good idea.
c.) Erica Bryson from Cortland State Collage was introduced.
4.) Minutes from the Sensitivity Committee were read by Clay Hamilton.
a.) Questions and clarifications were made.
b.) Comments about funding/support were made and
discussed.
c.) Concerns about (manditory) training program were
discused.
. d.) Recommendations about volunteers without sensitivity
training were made.
e.) A discussion about cost and effectiveness were
made.along with similar programs

5.) A summary of minutes were made by Rick Williams.
a.) The editorial type style from the June 24,1992 meeting
is on file.
b.) The possibility of problems concerning police/politics
was mentioned and reasurement was made that there
were different groups to help in such a situation. It was
suggested that looking into information about such
groups be done, such as the ACLU.
NEW BUSINESS
1.) All committee members will be receiving minutes from sub
committee meetings.
2.) We need to write up an idea of what our mission, goals and
expectations are. If members are asked at this time, we do not need
to tell anyone anything about the task force, all questions can be
directed to Alvin Nelson. It was agreeded that this should be done
quickly.
3.) Copies of articles about mentoring were given out and can be
discussed at a later date.
