HomeMy WebLinkAboutReport on the Flora of the Six Mile Creek Gorge - 19841 REVISED COPY Corrected & updated to mid-October, 1984 REPORT ON THE FLORA OF THE SIX-MILE CREEK RAVINE--- SUBMITTED BY William J. Dress Professor Emeritus -_-- _ The L. H. Bailey Hortorium -_ - Cornell University September 12, 1984 1 The following ferns and flowering plants have been identified as growing on the City of Ithaca owned property in the Six-Mile Creek area during 1984 up until mid-September, 1984. This list is prelimin- ary and as yet incomplete, since some areas have not been covered at all seasons, and certain groups of plants, particularly the grasses and sedges and related plants, await more intensive collection, and study during this winter and next year in .the laboratory. No attempt has been made to include the so-called lower plants---algae, fungi, mosses, etc. The following symbols have been used after some species names: (NN) - Non-native plants; i, plants not originally native to the Ithaca area, but introduced accidentally from elsewhere (mostly Europe or Asia) and now more or less established as part of the flora. (R) Rare or uncommon; i. e., plantsthat, according to observations so far, seem to be prsent in only small numbers in the Six-Nile Creek area under study. However, no non-native plants (see above under NN) are so-designated, even when uncommon. (I) - Invasive; i. e., plants that are non-native and threaten to become undesirably abundant, taking over habitats of native plants . with the possibility of reducing the numbers of, or eliminating, the latter. The nomenclature used in this listing is chiefly that used in Robert T. Clausen's "Checklist of the Vascular Plants of the Cayuga Quad- rangle, 42 -43 N., 76 -77 W.," Memoir 291, Cornell Univ. Agr. Exper. Sta., Ithaca, N. We submit this resolution: Resolution: CIRCLE GREENWAY strongly urges that the Stewart Park Advisory Group be continued - or a smaller one formed from it - in order to insure that there is an official body to monitor and encourage the implementation of • the exciting plans for the Park future. We think, also, an effort should be put forth to see that an appropriate part of the Park plan be completed for the 1988 celebration of the City of Ithaca Centennial. CIRCLE GREENWAY itself is beginning to explore ideas for our own contribution to the Centennial (as well as planning for our 10th Anniversary in 1986) .
