The commissioners were in- formed that the $5,000 appropri- ated last year for the work was si $828 short of the estimated final cost to which it was decided to add another $335 for construction of a curb around the west side ' of the building. More Fire Places Planned No other permanent improve- j ments other than the addition of ` more fire places and individual picnic grounds, the latter to be paid out of Department of Public Works funds, are contemplated to this year. By hording down ex- L penses this season, the commis- pI sioners believe they will be able C: to restore the trust to the $100,- ti( 000 principal figure. At present it is only $2,000 or $3,000 short of that sum due to the fact the principal has been drawn on pe- riodically in recent years for f major construction items such 1 as the Newman Municipal Golf 1 Course clubhouse, the bandstand 1 in the park proper and a small building on the Bergholtz Tract. 7 The supplemental appropria- c tion Monday was occasioned by p the fact workmen found the un- derpinning of the pavilion in much worse condition than they anticipated. It was necessary tc replace many supporting piers and to construct a new wall t around three sides of the build- ing. The old wooden porch was r also removed and is now being o replaced by a concrete court. 1; `Park Looks Wonderful' C Commissioner Sherman Peer, v commenting on park use, said, cl "I think the park looks wonder- a` ful—Ed Stewart would be very proud if he could see it today." IF He referred to the late Edwin C. L Stewart, former Ithaca mayor, who left the $100,000 in trust for park improvements and develop- ment. The commission has al- Ways subscribed to the belief that the fund could be best used by maintaining the principal and using the interest for improve- n ments. b Superintendent Laverty re- C ported the park had its best sea- p( son ever last year and he be- lieved it would prove even more v popular as a recreation center s this season. He attributed the f availability of picnic- facilities and lack of parking fees as be- ing contributing faftors in its in- creasing popularity. Allan H. Treman, who has served as chairman for the last : 15 years, was re-elected.
