It was suggested that for the 1925 season that the University might proceed with and com=plete the Beebe Lake job- 1, th,,?,t the Stewart Park Commission might proceed with 50,000 cubic yds or not to exceed an expenditure of $25,000. The following sugg wits the hope that they estions are presented v may be of value in formulating a profjram, for the present season. They are the result of study and consj.jltation with others interested in the j-1,aprovement of Stewart Park, to furnish the greatest possible recTeation- to the largest nut-Aber of -persons. These items have all been discussed at different times in- iaeetin,,_,;s of the Corvaission and are here presented to bring, thei,.i all under one heading for convenience. BOATS CANO'CS DOCKS Bybreas ns of the L location o4' the Park, on the Lake and w-LT r ounde d on three sides by rater boating should be one of the features. In calm weather the Lai-,-,.e and in Tough weather Fall Creek offers an opportunity of adequate boatin.-,-,; facilities. All that is lacking is the boats. The fact that this is a new feature makes it jr,1possible to interest a concessionaire to invest the necessary money for equipment. It seems then if this desirable feature is to be adl.&ed that it jaust be done by the paflc itself. The followin seems to be a minimum requirei-aent; g50.00 Canoes 6 a $25.00 - 390-00 Boats 6 a 65.00-- T fit al Y-5 .00 In addition to this equipment it would be necessary to build a simple dock or landing float to facilitate the loading and unloading of passengers and to beach and launch the boats and canoes. Ts ii is estimated at 4, ,1640.00. , 100.00 which would make the total 1w RADIO EQUIPJAE—NT An er has been su vested by -,,,Thich special broadcasts -' such as band concerts, and important addresses could be heard by a large number of people on the Park cgrounds. Thi s would be an attraction especially With such broadcasts as the Goldman Band in central Park. This installation is estiiiiated at 800-00-. It is the foundation of a public addre ss system rhereby a speaker in the Park ,'.iay be heard any where in tl.,.e Park or in a boat on the Lake. EXHIBITS It is suggested that we add to our exhibit of animals deer and ,ray squirrels. The deer might be kept in the woods south of the Park and add interest to the existing walks tl'arourji this area* The squiT---els could be kept in the Park Droper and in time wo-ald become tame enouSh to eat o-,, t of hand. Other vnriety of birds such as pheasants would also be interestin9p $200 would perhsp be ample at this time, the thought being to add only varieties Which can be easily iaaintalned. ROADS We have a start on an excellent road systera. Good foundations of stone and acovering of gravel. This requires, however, that they be oiled yearly to keer down the dust. They riust also be -onatched yearly where holes If a treatment si,11ilar to that at the entrance could be given I the roads in the Park, the result would be a nermanebt Toad with practiccaly no maintenance. This is has been estimated at anproxi',irttely 0. Vlhile this is an fig;-Lare , it is cheap for a hard -oaveraent and will no doubt be done sore tine. 4'C) ROLA& cast of 300 ^ ' ! ~ | ` | CA1,12 SITE The camp site, just east of the PaTic is at present an eye sore situated as it ic at the ParLr enyrance. Plans for its i-"Provev-ient are before yo and sho-ald be carried out soon as possible. Tt is planne6 to Ynake a large loop using the present road in frcr-t of the jTotel as two sides, Inside tlie loop -should be located a pavillon of a simple type such as log cabin style to house toilet for raen and women, a sink where dishes may be washed, tables to eat uT..)on in rainy we,:1JU'"-1Xe.- and perhpps a large fire place. The tents could then be pitched both on the inside and outside of the loop, and be served by the central building. The cost of this improve7inent is estimated as follows: Gradini- Planting 500 Cabin 2.000 PLANITING A considerable amount o.L' -olanting re-Ciains to be done to supiole.-,ient what has already been done. 17ild flowers on the banks of tne strearis.. ground covers, rind flowering, plants should be added yearly to build up the flora to its --qaxiYnum beauty. A s-iall yearly appropriation would acconplid'n this rewalt. ESPLANADE a-o-,-)earance of the so called Es-olanade is most unsatisfactory. 'The nlan cailed for tr,"ils through t'he natural flora. This has resaited- in a t----il running through large areas of skurac cabbage and cow parsnips which are not pleaswat. It is su&---,Zeeted t1iat ?P-00 be apT)roT)riated to i,,gprove a section of thts area as a sample. Then the plan could be extended in follo-,.4ring years until t;Le whole area had bE;e-,a covered. This method would brin-.", a rradu, - -orove!nent al and would not call for a naj or outlay of funds in eoiy one year. It has been siX--:;ested that the 1,arge floor of the Wait boathouse be utilized as a ,.iuseirft starting with exhibits of our native birds. This seems like an excellent use of this space. It is further attractive in that it can be had at practically no e-voense. In fact the cases for the exhibits are already on the grotuid and Dr. Allen only recuires that the caretaker be hioused in the building. This brings up the question of the apartment for the caretaker, which has been considered in the nast and should be restudied. / Strl-IT>ARY OF PROJ B0 T S. BOATING C omoes 6 we) 25 50.
