Home My WebLink AboutMN-CIV-1989-11-11 C REGULAR MEETING CITY OF ITHACA CIVIL SERVICE COMMISSION NOVEMBER 11 , 1989 PRESENT: Commissioner Bantuvanis, Commissioner Perko, Commissioner Cooper, Valerie Walker (Personnel Administrator) , Lisa Patz (Personnel Associate) , Denise Malone (Senior Stenographer) Commissioner Bantuvanis called the meeting to order at 3 : 50 p.m. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Commissioner Perko made a motion to accept the minutes of the October meeting. Seconded by Commissioner Bantuvanis . Motion carried. NEW BUSINESS RECLASSIFICATION REQUESTS YOUTH BUREAU Personnel Administrator Walker requested that this item be tabled to allow time for proper review of the Reclassification Requests . The Commission agreed to table this item to the next meeting . OLD BUSINESS EXAMINATION FEES Personnel Administrator Walker commented on the letter from the Affirmative Action Advisory Committee which states their concerns on charging a fee for exams . The Committee stated minorities already have a fear of the examination process and charging a fee for exams would only decrease their participation. Personnel Administrator Walker passed out a memorandum from Fire Chief Ed Olmstead. Fire Chief Olmstead is against charging exam fees because of the difficulty the City of Ithaca is currently experiencing in attracting local residents. Commissioner Cooper expressed strong feelings against charging fees for exams . She feels it is a form of discrimination. • Commissioner Cooper made a motion to waive civil service application fees as provided for by New York State Civil Service Law. Seconded by Commissioner Perko. Motion carried 2-1 , with Commissioner Cooper and Perko voting in favor of waiving the applicant fees, and Commissioner Bantuvanis voting against waiving them. CONTINUING BUSINESS Commission Bantuvanis made a motion that the Commission go into Executive Session to discuss civil service exam matters . Seconded by Commissioner Perko. Seconded by Commissioner Bantuvanis. Motion carried.
