Dear Supervisor Williams and Town Board:
At the Town Board Meeting on Wednesday,September 20,2023 Councilman
Leach inquired about the naming of Polkville.
Upon reviewing the Cortlandville Town Historian files I found an article that was
released in the 1979 Cortlandville Sesquicentennial booklet titled,‘How Did
Polkville Get Its Name’written by Jane Zogg. The article states that there is no
clear reason why this hamlet was named Polkville, but there are several theories.I
have attached the article to this correspondence.
I also reached out to Sophie Clough at the Cortland County Historical Society in
hopes that they may have more information. However, they responded with the
same article and stated that the unknown origin of naming is typical with many
hamlets.
It is my plan to continue the search for evidence to the naming of Polkville.I will
report back soon should I find any new information.
Respectfully,
Nick Alteri
