COAUWRJNM POLICE BOARD REPORT- 2008
M
In 2008, the CPB received 20 complaints from citizens about interactions with
police officers and 34 compliments of their interactions with them. Below is a chart
showing the numbers and findings of the Board after investigations were complete.
Founded/Unfounded/Withdrawn/ Reconciled/ Refused * / Open/ Total
2006 1 2 1 2 1 5 1 5 1 1 20
* Refused refers to those complaints not beyond the month's limit after
the event, or to complainants who planned to go to court at the same time. We do
not accept complaints nag after court, as they often tend to be used as evidence by
lawyers.
This pattern is quite close to that of 2007, when the months of January to
June or July were very quiet with no complaints, and then a rush of complaints
during the late summer and fWL Interestingly, very few complaints have been from
students over party noise. It appears that the introduction and follow through of
strict rules regarding parties and some may have began to be accepted as inevitable
by the students, as well as the two colleges' attempts to introduce more activities to
occupy them during periods of high celebration. The dissemiaatiou of written and
spoken clarification at the start of fall terms about expected behavior has probably
added to their reactions.
The Board lost three members during the year. Two died rather suddenly,
and one retired after 15 years as a part of the Board. This brought our numbers
down to 5. One new member was recruited in the early Fall, and another member
left at the end of her term in December, as she had moved out of the city.
After spending most of the year without a Youth Member, an HIS senior
year student joined the Board in December, and our total membership is now 6 out
of 9. We recruit with articles in the Journal occasionelly, a radio spot last year, and
have found that tabling at the Apple Harvest Festival reaches many people who are
new to town. We would like to fill the empty board spots, as our members have , in
the main, been serving for many years.
Our office at GIAC will be moving with the GIAC staff in 09 when the
building undergoes renovation, however, the timing and location is not yet known.
