Creation of described position ❑ Approved ❑ Disapproved Date: Signature: RETURN ONE COMPLETED COPY TO CORTLAND COUNTY CIVIL SERVICEIPERSONNEL July 12, 2017 Jurisdiction: Town of Cortlandville Jurisdictional Class: Competitive Adopted: PARKS & RECREATION MAINTENANCE SUPERVISOR DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: The work involves responsibility for planning and supervising the maintenance of park land, recreation facilities including athletic fields both natural and sports turf, playgrounds, picnic pavilions, trails, parking lots and associated recreation areas. An incumbent of this position is responsible for the safe, efficient and economical operation of the physical facilities and equipment used for recreational purposes. The work is performed under the general direction of the Recreation Director (P/T) and Town Highway Superintendent. Supervision is exercised over the work of subordinate staff. Does related work as required. TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative only) Confers with Recreation Director (P/T) and Town Highway Superintendent in such areas as work to be performed, equipment required and budget preparation for park needs; Supervises the construction and maintenance of parks, athletic fields and other recreation areas; Supervises ground maintenance activities such as cleaning, mowing, infield prep, lining fields, pavilion prep and general facility maintenance including plumbing, electrical, and carpentry; Supervises the repair and erection of playground equipment; Inspects buildings, grounds and equipment to insure that they are in safe condition to be used by participants; Oversees and schedules part-time and seasonal park maintenance staff; Instructs and mentors staff in the safe and efficient performance of building and grounds tasks; Reviews work performed by subordinates by on -site inspections; Prepares and maintains a variety of records and reports such as equipment inventory, purchase orders, motor equipment records, monthly activity reports and personnel records; Purchases, within prescribed limit, equipment and supplies; May operate motor equipment and perform minor building and grounds and motor equipment maintenance. FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Good knowledge of the methods, materials, terminology, and principals involved in the maintenance of parks and recreational areas, facilities, and equipment; Basic skills in the use and care of tools and equipment necessary for the maintenance and repair of park and recreational facilities; Ability to carry out oral and written directions; Ability to layout and supervise the work of subordinates; Ability to keep accurate records; Initiative; Manual dexterity; Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position. Parks & Recreation Maintenance Supervisor Page 1 12 MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Either: (a) Graduation from a regionally accredited college or university or one accredited by the New York State Board of Regents to grant degrees with a Bachelor's degree or higher in Recreation, Sports Management, or a closely related field; OR (b) Graduation from a regionally accredited college or university or one accredited by the New York State Board of Regents to grant degrees with an Associate's degree or higher in Recreation, Sports Management or a similar field and two (2) years of full-time paid (or the equivalent part-time and/or volunteer) experience working in a parks and recreation environment maintaining recreation facilities, grounds and equipment; OR (c) Graduation from High School or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and four (4) years of experience as defined in (b); OR (d) An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (a), (b) and (c). NOTE: Degree must have .been awarded by a college or university accredited by a regional, national, or specialized agency recognized as an accrediting agency by the U.S. Department of Education/U.S. Secretary of Education. If the degree was awarded by an educational institution outside of the United States and its territories, applicant must provide independent verification of equivalency.
