HomeMy WebLinkAboutAFisherLetterElectedAppointedMs. Stephanie Redmond, you have said on the radio that the positions of Town Clerk and Road Supervisor requires highly qualified persons due to the highly technical nature of their work. You have also stated that their qualifications require that they not be appointed in a popularity contest. What you refer to as a popularity contest is called a democratic election. These people may be popular because the voting population of Enfield believe they are doing an adequate if not an excellent job. Or perhaps the candidate is unchallenged as there is not enough electorate dissatisfaction to provide a challenger. Now if you believe the voting population in Enfield is not capable because of bias or ignorance of electing a qualified public servant then perhaps they are not qualified to elect any representation. If the voting population is not capable of qualifying a public servant then who is? Will the more educated or next higher government representative be qualified to appoint the servant? And who will be qualified to appoint that appointer? At what point does the highest available appointer become the last? Then when the last and most high appointer takes control, what form of government is that? It certainly is not a Democratic Republic but has morphed into a Socialist Dictatorship or worse. When our country’s founders laid out the blueprint for our nation’s government, they recognized the onerous task that was before them. They realized that there needed to be a plan and objective that would well serve a vast majority of its citizens. They also realized that to achieve that goal meant there would need be certain laws established for the protection of individual rights. They also realized that there are flaws in the human character. Unwarranted prejudice based in fear, hate, half-truths and selfish interests could undermine any established and peaceful society. They especially recognized that due to these human traits there was at times, in tried democratic experiments, equality failures. It was found that there was nepotism and cronyism where persons in positions of authority appointed unqualified friends and relatives to government positions. It was also found that with the use of fear, hate and half-truths, political factions could use subjective information to stir up the population to discriminate and unjustly attack persons of unpopular beliefs. This was what was referred to as a popular tyranny and it interfered with an individual’s God given right of free agency. You do not believe an appointment should be made by the vote of a combined cross-section of the citizens of Enfield because you believe the election process to be flawed and open to abuse. You may be correct, but we open the process to much more abuse when a faction makes the decisions.
