Youth Contributors: This issue includes contributions from several Enfield youth: • Jalisa Roberts, Siarra Hicks, and Renee Morris, Enfield 5th graders, wrote a report on the 2007-08 Enfield 4th & 5th grade basketball season. Summer is upon us! After the cold spring, it’s unsettling to have it suddenly so hot. The June garden was gone almost before it began. The children are off their schedules and we’ll soon be celebrating our country’s 232nd birthday. A time for grilling and fireworks! The 5th grade has graduated and is off to middle school and the seniors are off to many places, both far and near. Lauren Trenchard chose nearby Elmira College to get a Master’s in Nursing. Karyn Swanhart is off to Ithaca College. Austen Strait, Derek Voorheis, and Patrick Landon are enlisting in the Armed Forces. Most of these teens have participated in one or more of our Community Council programs so our organization feels very involved with their success. We want to especially thank Ellen Cole, Lauren, Austen, and Karyn, who have also worked for us the last few years. We have benefited greatly from their insights, good humor and responsibility toward seeing that the next generation of children becomes as responsible as they have. See the complete list of graduates inside. Our own Bill Eisenhardt was honored in May as the County Office for the Aging’s “Outstanding Senior of the Year”. Bill has been leading the Senior Citizens in Enfield for many years and has been active in our community in many capacities. He transports seniors to appointments, rototills gardens, does home repairs, heads up the Fire Company’s “Adopt a Highway” program and much, much more. In addition to a plaque, he received a letter of appreciation from Gov. Paterson. There is also a rumor that he got an all expense paid trip to Newfield…. CONGRATS, Bill!! Summer Camp starts July 7th. Call Vera Howe-Strait, Camp Director, 273-1413 to get your children signed up. Lots of good stuff is planned. Swimming in the parks, a play at the Hanger Theater, gardening and much more. Helen Jackson and her Green Thumbs have planted the barrels and put up new flags on the light poles. Many thanks for the beautification of the center of our community. Sadly, the “Welcome to Enfield” sign at the south end of town was sawed down and stolen on the evening of April 26th. A reward is being offered to anyone who has information that will lead to a successful prosecution. We are all hopeful we can recover this beautiful piece of art, which added so much to the aesthetics of our community. We live in one of the most beautiful parts of the country. Get out and enjoy it and take advantage of the many things to do (many, many for free) in our part of the world. See you in the daylily garden and at Grassroots! ~ A n n R i d e r , ECC Vice-President Enfield Youth Report This spring there have been many programs for Enfield youth-- both old and new. Ongoing programs include Monday Makers and Primitive Pursuits--both weekly programs for middle and high school aged youth. These give youth opportunities to gain life skills, take leadership in their community, and be with friends after school in a safe and positive environment. Two new programs have been offered this spring: I.F.O.s (Identified Flying Objects), during which youth learn about aerodynamics and create flying objects, and Lunch Bunch, an in-school lunch program with healthy snacks and team building games. Fifth graders at Enfield Elementary have also gotten a taste of Enfield Community Council's Youth Programs-- in Primitive Pursuits, Photography, and Crafts, Games, and Gardening. Participants in the Photography program will be showing their photography skills at the Enfield 5th Grade Graduation, so look for them there if you will be attending! This summer, Enfield programs will be centered at the Enfield Community Camp-- the CIT program (Counselors-In-Training), Primitive Pursuits, Photography and Crafts (to be sold at the Enfield Harvest Festival– cultivating our budding artists and entrepreneurs!). There will also be a 3-day Backpacking program during the end of June, where participants will walk on the Fingerlakes Trail just west of Enfield and camp along the trail. Finally, at the end of the summer and at the beginning of the school year, Enfield Youth will be gearing up for the Enfield Harvest Festival. Our youth volunteer at events, help with games, create crafts to sell, cook food at the festival, and, most importantly, participate in this fun community event. Another Man’s Treasure The Enfield 5th grade parents are sponsoring a rummage sale during the Harvest Festival. All proceeds will go to the 5th grade field trip fund. Contact Debbie Teeter, 277-4547, for more information! 2 Enfield Community Council Summer Day Camp Camp starts July 7th All applications with camp fees are due before that date Please use the gym entrance (by the large parking lot) to enter the Elementary School for Summer Camp. Look on the bulletin board and the Kindergarten/First Grade classroom doors for the camper lists for each group in that room. There will be plenty of camp counselors and staff available to help campers transition into the groups and learn where the classrooms are. Be sure to pick up the Letter from the Director and the camp breakfast & lunch menu, both available at the Before Camp sign-in table or from camp counselors. The front bulletin board will contain information important for the parents/ guardians of campers, such as camper groups, breakfast & lunch menu, July & August calendar, biweekly trips & events for each and/or all groups. Feel free to ask Vera at camp or call her beforehand at 273-1413 or email at vstrait18@htva.net (this is a new email). 3 Enfield School Age Program Hard to believe, but this is the end of another school year!! Congratulations to our graduating 5th graders; many of our school age students have been with us since kindergarten, so we have watched them grow into wonderful preteens. All the staff at the School Age program wish these students lots of luck and success in the remainder of their school years, and don't forget to visit us sometimes! The program has concluded the school year with minimal indoor time; just enough to continue the structured group time (with a quote to interpret, poem to memorize, a weekly challenge, sometimes daily riddles from the students, a chapter book and group art activity). We are outside as much as possible, as the students prefer outside open-ended play at this time of year. Parents wishing to enroll their child(ren) in the School Age Program for the 2008-09 school year can do so before the end of the school year by getting an application from the program, in the main office, or at Open House Night in September. I would like to give a personal thank you to Colleen Spercel. Colleen took over the Director responsibilities in September this year and I became the Activities Coordinator of the program. Colleen has put a tremendous amount of time in to create a new financial structure (including the new parent fee monthly budget structure and the budget layout for the program), maintaining the state regulations (including staff training), and helping to revise and update the Parent Handbook. Colleen and I would like to thank the staff for another wonderfully successful program year. A program is only as good as the individuals vested in its success and daily workings. To Marge and Miss Abbie, we thank you for returning to the program for many years now. It makes the daily workings easier when staff are familiar with the routines, have individual styles that intertwine nicely with each other, and support our program goals for the children. To Tammy and Kathey, new staff members who fit easily into the program, thanks for committing yourselves to all new activities and projects. A special thank you to our teens, who do/have come one to five days a week: Amber, Marley, Karyn and Austen. That teen energy comes in quite handy with our crowd!! Also congratulations and good luck to Karyn and Austen, our graduating High School Seniors. Lastly, a BIG thanks to our Parent Board for their volunteer hours to make sure the program runs successfully, stay on top of state regulations and provide support for the staff throughout the year. In closing, the Enfield School Age Program would like to give an extra special thank you to Mary Burtless for her endless support for and acknowledgement of our program, its staff and children. We will miss your quick in-and-out visits and your asking for some snacks to tide you over through the nightly meetings. You will be missed by all. Once you are signed up you will stay informed of a huge variety of classes, programs, activities and events that are fun and healthy for kids, individuals and the whole family! 4 and 5th Grade Basketball Basketball this year was amazing. We played nine games in all, and won five. We played a lot better than last year, and we worked better as a team. Our coach, John Hicks, told us to work on having fun and not winning. We did just what he said - we had fun when we won and when we lost. The assistant coach, Kathy Hicks, coached us one game when coach John was unable to make it. We won that game by stealing the ball and jump balls. It’s the best sport we’ve ever played. If we didn’t play basketball we wouldn’t know what to do. We would probably go home, sit on the couch, and watch TV. Ok, on to the cool stuff. Let’s start with our coach, John. John is the best coach you could ever have. We’ve had our ups and downs with him and each other, but he got us though it all. This year we learned how to make lay-ups, jump shots, free throws, and how to run plays. Every Thursday we had practice. In practice we stretched, ran plays and played games that helped us with shooting, dribbling and running plays. Before practice, we went to the library to do homework, eat a snack, and wait for 3:00 pm to come. After the last game we got medals and our picture taken. We had a pizza party at the coach’s house. We had pizza, brownies, listened to music and watched movies. Overall we had a great year. We played hard, made more friends and had fun!!!! - Submitted by Jalisa Roberts, Siarra Hicks, and Renee Morris REWARD OFFERED For information leading to the successful prosecution those who stole our Town Sign Many people in the community appreciated and felt pride in the beautiful new Town of Enfield signs installed last year, and are understandably hurt and saddened by the violent theft of one of them on the night of April 26, 2008. Can you help identify the person(s) that cares so little about our community? Concerned Citizens of Enfield are establishing a reward of $500 for information leading to the successful prosecution pf the person or persons responsible for this theft. The sign was located on Town property on Rt. 327, south of the hamlet of Enfield. Upon a successful conviction, the Tompkins County District Attorney’s office, in conjunction with the Tompkins County Sheriff’s Department, will be asked to identify people whose information led to the conviction(s), at which point the reward money will be distributed. If there is no arrest within a three (3) year period, the monies will be used to help replace the missing sign or, if not needed for that purpose, the funds will go to the Enfield Community Council or returned to the donor, if requested. The Enfield Community Council will hold monies collected in a designated fund. Would you like to help with the Reward Fund? Farm City Day 2008 Saturday, August 9th, 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Farm City Day 2008 celebrates Tompkins County agriculture with a trip to an Alpaca farm. Owned by Jay and Carol Engels and Carol’s parents, Mal and Ellie Hunter, Angel Tree Farm will open its operation and welcome visitors on Saturday, August 9th from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. In 4 short years Angel Tree Farm has grown from three adult female alpacas, two with Crias (offspring), to a herd of 30, including 12 females. They have now reached a point where their breeding stock is sufficient to sell offspring; they have already sold 9 alpacas. The family also shears the herd and sells some of the fiber, while having the rest spun into yarn. There is a farm gift shop with many lovely and practical, soft and warm alpaca fiber items, including hand knitted, hand felted one-of-a-kind hats by Ellie. Farm City Day will be a great opportunity to learn all about this increasingly popular small ruminant: dietary and husbandry needs, lifecycle and breeding, how alpaca fiber differs from other natural fibers, and what makes them a worthwhile investment. This event is a celebration of the food and fiber system, and Angel Tree Farm offers a chance to explore the fiber system in detail. In addition to the always-popular Sheep and Border Collie exhibition with Sharon Garland, visitors can expect to see spinners, weavers and fiber artists plying their crafts. Attendees can also get some lunch at the 4-H concession stand, sit in the food tent across from one of the pastures and watch the alpacas, which incidentally come in 22 natural colors, frolic and roam. Angle Tree Farm is also home to peacocks, chickens, rabbits, and a few llamas, so there will be lots of animals to check out. Many regular exhibitors and activities will round out the day, including the Tompkins County Soil and Water Conservation District with their mascot Ronnie Raindrop to demonstrate how farmers work to protect the watershed, the Tompkins County Dairy Princess with samples of several varieties of McCadam cheese, Tompkins County Farm Bureau with great exhibits highlighting the importance of agriculture, Quality Milk with the Milkable Cow, and lots more! Children won’t miss a thing when they fill up their Farm Fact Find Passport to Fun, which guides them to different activities around the event. Last but not least, no one will want to miss the Ag in the Classroom Silent Auction, featuring a wonderful selection of goods and services from local artists, crafters, restaurants and businesses. We had one barbecue for each month; January, February, March, and April. Unfortunately, we sold out quickly every month. We increased the number of halves each month to try and accommodate without having too much of a surplus. Even with the additional halves, we continued to sell out quickly and had to turn some folks away. We apologize for any inconvenience we caused to those who were sent home empty- handed. At the same time, we thank everyone for the overwhelming support. Everyone who purchased dinners at the winter barbecues was eligible to win an outside fireplace. The winner was drawn after all sales were completed at the April barbecue, and the ticket chosen was Bonnie Turcsik from Enfield. Individuals who purchased more than 12 dinners over the course of the 4 events were eligible to win the grand prize, which was a stainless steel barbecue grill. This winner was also drawn at the April barbecue, and the grand prize winner was Linda Schumaker, from Ithaca. Thanks again for your support, and hopefully we'll see you at the next winter barbecue, which will kick off in January, 2009. Lacey Foote Crowned Tompkins County Dairy Princess In May of this year Lacey Foote was crowned the Tompkins County Dairy Princess. She is the 18 year old daughter of Steve and Linda Foote of McLean. Lacey is a recent graduate from Dryden High School and will be attending TC3 in the fall for general studies and then plans to go on to become a pediatric nurse. She lives and helps out on her family’s crop farm, is involved in Cortland County 4-H and Teen Council, the McLean Community Church Youth Group and the Jr. Holstein Club. During the summer, Lacey enjoys showing cows at the local shows and racing her 4-wheeler on the weekends. Lacey works at Walden Place in Cortland as a dining aide and at the Cortland Youth Bureau. Helping Lacey fulfill the requirements of the program are three Dairy Ambassadors. Hannah Baker is the daughter of Jamie and Jenny Baker of Ithaca, Abigail Teeter is the daughter of Alan and Debbie Teeter of Ithaca, and Kortney Vickery is the daughter of Neil and Heather Stevenson of Trumansburg. Lacey would like to remind people that June was National Dairy Month and a quick, healthy and refreshing treat is a yogurt parfait. This is an easy snack to make with your children and is a good source of calcium. Fresh Fruit Yogurt Parfaits Plain or Vanilla Yogurt Fresh Fruit (bananas, strawberries, Your favorite Granola melon, blueberries, fresh pineapple) Layer vanilla, granola and fruit in a tall glass; repeat layers. Chill well, serve. The goal of the Dairy Princess program is to promote the number one industry in New York State – dairy farming, and to help educate the public about the health benefits of including calcium-rich dairy products in their diet. Stop by and See Lacey and her Court at the Enfield Harvest Festival on September 20th—they’ll be handing out free samples of delicious McCadam Cheese & making a GIANT Ice Cream Sundae! 5 2008 Great Pumpkin Contest Rules Sponsored by the ECC To be held at the Enfield Harvest Festival: September 20, 2008 1. For the purpose of this contest, a pumpkin will be considered any vegetable of the Cucurbita pepo or Curcurbita maxima family that is mostly orange, pale orange, orange yellow or cream color with a slight orange cast. 2. There will be first, second and third prizes awarded for the competition. 3. All the pumpkins must be grown within 15 miles of Enfield Center. The grower must be present at weigh-in. No extra weight or foreign objects may be added to the pumpkin. Pumpkins must be in good physical condition to qualify for a prize. Small scratches, dents, scuffs, woodchuck bites, etc. which do not threaten the structural integrity of the pumpkin will be allowed at the discretion of the judges. Any pumpkins with a hole that exposes the internal cavity, is severely leaking or on the verge of collapse will be disqualified. The judges reserve the right to inspect or probe any pumpkin to determine that the pumpkin is in good physical condition and that no foreign objects have been added. Refusal to allow this inspection will disqualify you from competition. 4. The winner will be judged by weight alone. The weight will be rounded to the nearest ½ lb. Circumference, shape or general appearance will have no bearing on the competition. 5. The vine must be trimmed to within two (2) inches of the pumpkin stem. If the stem is broken off at the competition, it will be allowed to be weighed with the pumpkin. 6. The loading and unloading of all pumpkins is solely the responsibility of the entrant. 7. Weigh-in will be between 10:00 am to 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 20, 2008 at the Enfield Harvest Festival. 8. Entries need to be picked up between 4:00 to 5:00 pm on Saturday, September 20th. 9. The winners will be announced at 12:00 p.m. or when weigh-in is completed. 10. Occasionally a ruling must be made by the judges that may not specifically be stated in the rules of this contest. These rulings will be made on a case-by-case basis and all decisions are final. For more information contact Carol Givin at 273-7434. Enfield Valley Grange We would like to thank the Enfield community for their support of our Pancake Breakfasts this spring. [Editor’s Note: Yum Yum!] Several community activities are being planned for this summer and fall. The Enfield Valley Grange has been invited to be a food vendor for the Ithaca Scottish Games to be held at the Pinecreek Campground, located on Rockwell Road, on Saturday, July 12, beginning at 8:00 a.m. We will be serving breakfast, lunch and dinner. Come visit us and enjoy good food and the Scottish Games! This is a good tourism event for our town, and a great opportunity for the Grange. Our meetings are held the third Wednesday of each month, beginning at 7:00 p.m.; please join us. 6 For the Farm Community: This safety alert has been sent by the National Propane Gas Association Anhydrous Ammonia and Propane Cylinders SAFETY ALERT Caution! The brass valve in a propane cylinder will be damaged if it comes in contact with anhydrous ammonia. This deterioration will lead to cracking of the valve body or its components and can ultimately result in a violent, unexpected expulsion of the valve from the cylinder, causing personal injury or death. Meetings include a dish-to-pass luncheon. We recently welcomed five new members. Tompkins County Office for the Aging Announces the 2008 Senior Citizen of the Year: Bill Eisenhardt The Tompkins County Office for the Aging has awarded William Eisenhardt the award for Senior Citizen of the Year. Bill has worked tirelessly for seniors in the Enfield community for many years. He is President of the Enfield Senior Citizens and has also worked with the Enfield Volunteer Fire Department since 1983. Additionally, Bill leads the Enfield Fire Company’s Highway Clean Up program. Though retired, he continues to respond with the Enfield Volunteer Fire Company to emergency calls and perform the duties of the Fire Police, controlling traffic and providing a measure of security at the scene of emergency and non-emergency fire and medical incidents. Bill’s contributions help to make Enfield a great place for seniors to live. Enfield Historical Society The Enfield Historical Society generally meets the 3rd Wednesday of the month at 7:00 p.m. in the downstairs of the Community Building. A picnic for the membership is being planned for the August meeting, date to be determined. 2008-09 membership dues are $5 Individual, $7 Family, $10 Organizational, and $100 or more Lifetime. Historic Ithaca Compiling Barn Inventory Historic Ithaca is pleased to announce the Tompkins County Barn Project. This is a three-phase program which aims to raise awareness and appreciation of the rural heritage and historic barns of Tompkins County. The first phase is a contest. We will be accepting applications from barn owners competing for titles like “Oldest Barn” and “Tallest Silo”. During the second phase, Historic Ithaca staff will be conducting an in-depth survey of historic outbuildings throughout the county, in collaboration with town historians and barn enthusiasts. The final phase will be the Barn Conference during the weekend of October 4th and 5th, presented by Historic Ithaca and the New York State Barn Coalition. Contest winners will be announced at the awards ceremony on the evening of the 4th. Many of the eligible households that do not participate in the Food Stamp Program are not aware that they may be eligible. Catholic Charities offers free and confidential pre-screenings for Food Stamp benefits. With rising fuel and food costs, working families may need help stretching their food dollar. The Food Stamp Program can help. Call us with questions about eligibility, income guidelines and estimated benefits. We can assist individuals and families through the entire application process. Enfield Food Pantry The Enfield Food Pantry is available to Enfield residents who need help providing food for themselves and their family. The pantry is open on the second Tuesday of every month from 1:00 - 3:00 p.m. and on the fourth Tuesday from 12:00 - 4:00 p.m. The pantry is located at the Enfield Community Building at 182 Enfield Main Road and is a ministry of the Enfield Baptist Fellowship. The Town of Enfield provides the space and utility costs. The Enfield Community Blessing Shop The Enfield Community Blessing Shop, 174 Enfield Main Road, is now open. Stop by from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on the 2nd and 4th Saturday of each month, though November. The Blessing Shop is a ministry of The First Baptist Church of Enfield Center. We provide used clothing and household items to anyone in need. ALL items are free, everyone is welcome! We accept donations of slightly used clothing and household items. The games will offer a taste of all things Scottish (and a few things Irish), but you don’t have to be a Scot to attend. There will be plenty of entertainment and food to appeal to folks of any nationality. Ticket prices are: Adults (18-64) $9, Seniors (65+) $7, Students (5-17) $7, Children under 5 are free.
