HomeMy WebLinkAboutMN-PAC-2015-04-22Approved – 5/27/15 City of Ithaca Public Art Commission April 22, 2015 Present: Jessica Shurberg, Caleb Thomas, Sally Grubb, Samantha Hillson Public: Rowan, student from Ithaca High School 1. No Additions/Deletions 2. Unable to approve March minutes because they are pending. 3. Public Comment: Student from IHS introduced himself, fulfilling requirement for government class, interest in photography. 4. Murals: a. Ramiro Davaro-Comas: Manimal Friends – • Discussion of currently approved walls that might be possible for Ramiro’s piece • Reminder from last meeting that Ramiro would like to be able to paint in a location where he is able to interact with the public • PAC proposes the concrete triangles on either side of the stairway of the Green St Garage that descends in front of Cinemapolis. There is a triangle shape on each side of the base of the stairs and a storage door under the stairs. We would like to send the photo of the triangle wall pieces to Ramiro so that he can resubmit his proposal with new manimal images. (Caleb sent photo of proposed location to Megan) b. Michael Sampson: Hand Balancer – • Discussion: abstract, different than many current murals that are specific images • Discussion about different locations for this mural, the proposed wall in Green St. or the pillar inside the Seneca St. garage, which would be a smaller space. PAC likes the smaller, previous works from Mr. Sampson and would like to see that level of finished/defined work in this mural piece (such as Three Graces). PAC voted and all in favor of moving this mural forward, but would like to have public comment on both the pillar and the Green St. wall (Caleb sent images to Megan). Additionally, PAC will wait to see the decisions of Art in the Heart, because that may determine how large the piece will be and how much additional funding Mr. Sampson will still need. 5. Other Business: a. Dryden Road Garage Murals: Caleb is contacting Margaret and Nate to remind them to contact Megan for the contract. We are excited to see progress on these murals. b. Columbia Street Pedestrian Bridge wall is on the Board of Public Works agenda to be approved for public art on May 11 at 4:45pm. Sam will email Joe from Natural Resources to notify him about this meeting. c. PAC Goals and Projects: • Discussion about meeting time. Sam will send out a Doodle. Approved – 5/27/15 • Ideas about branching out to other types of art: 3-D, street furniture, sculpture, performance art, light/sound/video installation • Bike racks: more discussion should be had about trying this in Collegetown with redevelopment of College Ave. • Collaboration with beautification, landscape, Parks Commission, CSMA, Ballet school, neighborhood associations, Circus School to develop schedule of outdoor performances in the parks • PAC will start this process by writing a letter to the Parks Commission/Department requesting a meeting to discuss public art activities in the parks. Sam will draft letter
