Present: Teagen Barresi, Nina Bassuk, Cynthia Brock, Judy Fogel, Pamela Markham, Paul Paradine, Debra
Statton, Keith Vanderhye
Forester’s Report by Teagen: the crew is doing removals and stump grinding. About eleven more trees are
posted now for removal; these are hazard trees . . .elm by the Salvation Army on Albany , oak on East Hill at
Elmwood, sugar on S. Albany, rest sugars and Norways. They’re in addition to the list he gave us.
Teagen is going through the South Side ‐‐‐Corn, Clinton, South Albany ‐‐‐and adding stuff to the pruning list.
He updated the Commons list and inventoried the cemetery. Everything on the Commons has water
bags; he’s checked to make sure they’re working. Need more than once a week watering for the new trees.
As of tomorrow, the crew is starting to treat the knotweed on the Inlet at the bottom of Hector ‐‐‐with a
needle into their hollow stems.
The crew is getting ready for planting season. Jeanne is buying containerized trees from Plantasia for
Aurora and Tioga where the Flexi‐pave is to go in.
There’s also a lot of sidewalk work going on so Jeanne is advising how to work around the big roots.
The crew weeded and trimmed the pedestrian gardens at both ends of the Columbia Street bridge and
mulched there.
Planting 34 no wires, 9 underwire and 10 near South Titus where there are overhead wires. Nina’s
suggestions from the Schichtel availability list:
Big—Acer nigrum ‘Green Column,’ a subspecies of sugar
Cercidliphyllum japonicum (Katsura tree) for parks, low branched
Horse chestnut ‘Autumn Splendor’
Purple catalpa
Ky coffee’ Espresso’
Tilia Mongolica ‘Harvest gold’
Swamp white oak
Tilia ‘American sentry’
Tilia ‘Redmond’ really good
Smaller trees for underwire
Maakia amurensis
Malus ‘Professor Sprenger’ really good
Syringa reticulata ‘Ivory Silk’ good
Pyrus callaryana ‘Jack’ might try this a dwarf to 20 feet
Keith got in touch with the bank and we’ve been given carte blanche to take down and replant in front of
the bus station; the bank will pay for removals and replacements. 3 of the Metasequoias must come out and
2 are okay. Would be good to get the dead ones out soon, but the City crew is busy, does Keith have time?
Although we don’t want to rush into something‐‐‐can have something special there‐‐‐ a row of Metasequoias
would be nice there. Schichtels has 2‐2.5” b&b Metasequoia glyptostroboides, get 3 big ones? We as STAC
could plant. Keith will give the estimate to Greg Wilder and then call Jeanne to confirm the order.
Between Buffalo and State Streets we need to put a “no spray” sign so that Norfolk Railroad won’t spray.
They usually spray early in May with a pre‐emergent.
No response yet from JoAnn and Lisa, and it’s been almost 3 weeks since our letter. Nina will have to call them.
Why no response? Cynthia will talk to them tonight at Planning and Economic Development meeting.
Letter requesting money for Forestry Technician: Nina will draft it and send around to us. Budget meetings
begin in Oct. The letter should go to the Mayor and to Common Council. Cynthia suggests adding dollar amounts
for 6 and 4 month positions. Nina will clarify what portion of the seasonal budget would be included (and
subtracted from the $19,600).
Next meeting Wed, October 14, 4 pm. Minutes respectfully submitted by Debra Statton
