PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE:
Mayor Peterson led all present in the Pledge of Allegiance to the American Flag.
SPECIAL ORDER OF BUSINESS:
2.1 Dismissal of Outgoing Council
Mayor Peterson extended her thanks and appreciation to outgoing Common Council
members Michelle Berry, David Gelinas and Gayraud Townsend.
Alderperson Clairborne stated that it had been an honor to serve with Alderpersons
Townsend and Berry, and that he learned a lot through both of them. He noted that he
would miss Alderperson Berry’s advocacy on issues and Alderperson Townsend’s
common sense approach. He also expressed his appreciation to Alderperson Gelinas
and stated that he enjoyed working collaboratively with him on issues such as the
Community Investment Incentive Program.
2.2 Oath of Office – Mayor Elect
City Clerk Holcomb administered the oath of office to Carolyn K. Peterson who
assumed her position of Mayor of the City of Ithaca.
2.3 Oath of Office – Alderpersons Elect
Mayor Peterson called the newly elected and re-elected Alderpersons to the rostrum to
be sworn into their respective offices:
Maria Coles - re-elected as Alderperson for the First Ward
Jennifer Dotson - newly elected as Alderperson for the First Ward
Eric Rosario - newly elected as Alderperson for the Second Ward
Joel Zumoff - re-elected as Alderperson for the Third Ward
Svante Myrick - newly elected as Alderperson for the Fourth Ward
Daniel Cogan - re-elected as Alderperson for the Fifth Ward
2.4 Remarks from Mayor Peterson
Mayor Peterson extended a warm welcome to the Common Council members and their
families and friends. She stated that she would be announcing committee structures at
the first regular Common Council meeting scheduled for January 2, 2008 at 7:00 p.m.
She further stated that much ground work was laid in 2007 for the upcoming year and
that she would present her State of the City address at the January Common Council
meeting.
Alderperson Coles welcomed the new members of Common Council and stated that
they have already proven themselves by their hard work and dedication within the
community.

Alderperson Myrick thanked the Common Council members who have taken him under
their wings. He further thanked his family and friends for their support and help. He
stated that Alderperson Townsend was a great mentor and set a great example for him
to follow. He hopes to be as successful as Alderperson Townsend was.
Alderperson Rosario thanked his family and members of the community for their help
and support during his campaign. He stated that he has a deep love for his
neighborhood, the ward he serves, and the City. He voiced his appreciation for
Alderperson Berry’s support and confidence in him to succeed her in representing the
Second Ward of the City of Ithaca.
Alderperson Dotson stated that she feels that the next two years will be a success
because the members of Common Council will make a great team. She echoed
Alderperson Rosario’s sentiments regarding her love for her neighborhood, the ward
she serves, and the City. She further extended thanks to her friends for their support.
Alderperson Tomlan welcomed Alderpersons Dotson, Myrick, and Rosario to Common
Council and stated that these members of Common Council have already spent hours
working on behalf of the community. She thanked them for their investment in the City
and that she would like to encourage other community members to volunteer to serve
on a City Board or Committee to share their talents and expertise, and to consider
eventually running for a seat on Common Council.
Mayor Peterson acknowledged and welcomed former Mayor Alan J. Cohen who was
present in the audience and wished him a Happy New Year.
