City of Ithaca Workforce Environment
Extensive discussion was held on the creation of a committee
to review and strengthen City policies and procedures that
will enhance the work environment for City employees. A
draft statement was distributed along with a draft diversity
statement for Common Council to consider.
Alderperson Blumenthal suggested that the memo not be
distributed to the workforce until Common Council has had
more of an opportunity to review it.
Alderperson Sams stated that the City’s Affirmative Action
Committee has already been given this charge, has conducted
interviews with employees, and has submitted a report on its
findings. She suggested that a task force be created with
members of the Affirmative Action Committee.
Mayor Cohen stated that he believes that the Affirmative
Action Committee has a more focused mission and that Common
Council members should be involved in this task force.
Human Resources Director Schelley Michell-Nunn stated that
she favored a larger committee with a broader focus.
This item was referred to the August 24, 1997 Special
