August 19, 1998 PRESENT: Mayor Cohen Alderpersons (9) Blumenthal, Hershey, Manos, Vaughan, Spielholz, Taylor, Farrell, Sams, Shenk EXCUSED: Alderperson Marcham OTHERS PRESENT: City Clerk – Conley Holcomb Human Resources Director – Michell-Nunn PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE: Mayor Cohen led all present in the Pledge of Allegiance to the American flag. SPECIAL ORDER OF BUSINESS: Executive Session: Resolution By Alderperson Hershey: Seconded by Alderperson Spielholz RESOLVED, That Common Council adjourn into Executive Session to discuss the employment history of an individual employee and a land acquisition item. Carried Unanimously Reconvene: Common Council reconvened into Regular session. No items were brought forth. City of Ithaca Workforce Environment Extensive discussion was held on the creation of a committee to review and strengthen City policies and procedures that will enhance the work environment for City employees. A draft statement was distributed along with a draft diversity statement for Common Council to consider. Alderperson Blumenthal suggested that the memo not be distributed to the workforce until Common Council has had more of an opportunity to review it. Alderperson Sams stated that the City’s Affirmative Action Committee has already been given this charge, has conducted interviews with employees, and has submitted a report on its findings. She suggested that a task force be created with members of the Affirmative Action Committee. Mayor Cohen stated that he believes that the Affirmative Action Committee has a more focused mission and that Common Council members should be involved in this task force. Human Resources Director Schelley Michell-Nunn stated that she favored a larger committee with a broader focus. This item was referred to the August 24, 1997 Special Meeting for further discussion.
