Special Meeting 7:30 P.M. October 16, 1980

PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE:
Mayor Bordoni le all present in the Pledge of Allegiance to the
American flag.
SPECIAL ORDER OF BUSINESS:
Appointment of Deputy City Controller
By Alderman Gutenberger: Secon e by Alderman Saccucci.
WHEREAS, the Common Council has established the office of Deputy City
Controller for the City of Ithaca, and
WHEREAS, the Common Council has deemed the appointment of said De u
City Controller to be a necessary and immediate need, and p ty
WHEREAS, the Mayor has appointed a committee of Common Council to
search for potential candidates for such office and make recommenda-
tions to the Mayor, and
WHEREAS, the said committee has performed its function admirably and
the Mayor has given due and careful consideration to the matter;
(40we NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, That this Common Council does hereby
approve the appointment of Dominick R. Cafferillo to an indefinite
term to the office of Deputy City Controller, and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the starting salary of Dominick R.
Cafferillo in the office of Deputy Controller be fixed at $25,011
commencing November 3, 1980.
Discussion followed on the floor.
Alderman Saccucci asked Mayor Bordoni if he would care to divulge to
the public the procedure used to select the Deputy Controller for
appointment.
Mayor Bordoni outlined the procedure as follows:
The position was advertised as required by law.
Thirty -three applicants were received for consideration.
The Mayor assigned the Budget and Administration Committee as
a search committee to review applications, select six most
qualified persons, interview the six and recommend three from
Which the Mayor might make a choice.
Mayor Bordoni commented that Mr. Cafferillo was one of the two
(6000'� finalists recommended by the committee; and he and the committee
felt that Mr. afferillo was extremely well qualified, bringing
many bent f_i_ts to the City. IIe said one question asked of all those
i n to i v i ewecl was why they w i slied to wor-k fo r the city and Mr. Ca fferil l o
answered that the City of Ithaca has a sound fiscal management policy
and way of doing things.
A vote on the resolution resulted as follows:
Carried
Mr. Cafferillo took the oath of office and was sworn in by the City
Clerk.

Resolution
By Alderman Gutenberger: Seconded by Alderman Boronkay
RESOLVED, That any Charter change in connection with the position of
Deputy City Controller be referred to the Charter and Ordinance
Committee and the City Attorney.
Carried
Mrs. Sheila Cafferillo was present at the meeting and was introduced
to the Council.
ADJOURNMENT:
On a motion the meeting adjourned at 7:50 p.m.
