The Enfield Eco -Foresters are Iearn] ng ;sustainable forestry, practices by actually doing; them_ _
This month ,on Dec. 16"' , 12.Enf elders braved. the weather and came out to help for5
hours to build GrassRoots ice house. in addition to Nving out the gravel `pad', which , --
serves as the foundation, they spread and le,.reled the gravel, serewed boards togetheraand
when it wasn't raining, quicklygot the floor- level of straw in place.., we grade a :fire And'
hot Latino lunch including homemadetortillas. Finally',Lanny;Toyce, engir�eer,from TAke-
Source Cooling., using basic physics formulas, teaching about R "value in insulation., dew-'-,
point and vapor harriers, estimating local temps w/ the help of the kids; predicted thai.we,
could have ice for up to 2 years and that at the end af.Itily there. shoilld he -more fhn;:1t1�o

of the ice fro -ten. What an experiment! The goals ofthis'program include: coin munity,service,-
environmental stewardship_ ecologicalawareness, exposure to many types oi'wror{hui+liile
careers, listening skills and following directions, group dynamics and -cooperation; .discovering
creative talents. commitment to a cause, building confidence in writing skills and eonsttuCtibm "
abilities, possibly a chance- at a rnicrotenterprise.
• Thursday Outlines GrouQ(12/'x,12/14.12/21)-11 participants- one spot to fill..
• .12/2 Durand's Forge -1 l; kids 4-;boys/7 girls -Learned the basic's of forging,_ _.each kid made
anail and a hook... checked out. the shared crafting studio and"toured Durand's artyard_

discovering creative talents, exposure to a local crafteractuallyearning a deeenfrtiral living
making art and innovative tools. trying out and learning the skill of iron forging:,,
• 12/2 -Forest and soils evaluation At Wilson Ponds Locust Woods (new site Ziesi"gnated to
sustainable management and education... Dr. fond is a retired animal science -professor W -ho
raises a special breed of poled sheep and is also happy to share his `agricultaral'lu;a�vledge
with our group. Had a hot Iunch in PerryCiLy. 1 1 kids, boysi'7 girls. ;
• The Monday Makers crafting sessions on Mondays'3:30 til 6:30 .Goals"include: listening :.
skills and following directions, group dynamics and cooperation, building confidence by;
discovering creative talents, considering crafting as a career
• Monday Makers -'Dee.
• 12/4--11 kids 6 boys /5 girls- made.ornaments and presents from our repertoire
• 12/11- 11 kids 5 boys/6-girls made wreaths and pomander balls

12/18-11 kids 4 boys 17 girls baked -13 dozen cookies for the Dewitt teachers and all got to
take some home for their families
• 12/16 Ice House Construction-12k-lds 3 boys/ygirls (see top -of page and Journal article)
• Other time consum-ers-Holidays. took R' days vacation_ produCed and mailed 120 ca)endan.
producing monthly report for FCC meeting, planning future activities, shopping; for programs,
CCETC meetings/ Dan meeting _meeting at Black Locust, emails /phonecalls to the Journal to .
advertise_ program prep and cleanup transporting kirk_ phone calls to kids/parents. Writing -
letters and permission forms, emailed to secure cabins at Arnot for a Feb_ overnight

swimming/skating requests are coming in so l'11 try for some Saturdays in Feb .still need to work
out sewing classes_ Saturdays are so filled in Feb already_ maybe during break or -afternoons ___Eco
forestry kids will meet once a month (at least)- scheduling an Ethics talk w/ Carl Leopold and plan
to take the kids to research Aldo Leopold before hand- hopefully-Feb/Ivlarch, have arranged an
overnight at a lodge in Arnot (not for free -$10 per kid).- Row hunters safety course is scheduled to
take place at 4 H Acres 1120& IJ27-advertising with fivers and in -the Journal Next community- trig
to the Strong Children's Museum- is arranged for Dr. King's Holiday. R-4:30:.. I need to hook up w/
the 5`h grade teachers again about scheduling Johnson Art Museum wea,gingtrip-(they still aren't
sure when they'll get to S. America),I am looking forward to being the community collaborator for
a mini grant Mrs. Finnigan got, to create a clay tile neural -"Enfield Grows Together" -I will
participate in school with the 3-'-5'h graders assisting Christine and the tile expert with the
process. _ _ I have offered to hold -make up classes if needed- this is an- ongoing project (set.to:begin
in Feb.) The teens will assist Steve Givin in grouting, framing and mounting the finished product.. If
you would like to review the grant proposal and timeline, I have a copy -of the application:
I am excited to have met Bill Alberta, longi time career councilor at Cornell who.has generously,
offered to extend his guidance to our career oriented program He can help us, learn about resumes
and how to wisely choose courses in high school aimed at a specific vocation or in in -college_
He will also be able to introduce -us to all the resources available at Cornell _

• The Enfield Eco -Foresters are a newly formed group, learning sustainable forestry practices by actually doing•them,. Flack"
Locust Initiative, a local, nonprofit organization of environmental: educators has been leading-these,programs "and Eve several
exciting projects that we are lucky to be able to take advantage of. Since the recent replanting at the Arne!: Forest; inanykids
have expressed interest in'helping to finish the job- Many educational subjects and expert presenters have"beeri integrated into
these ongoing programs. Topics and related, activities may include erivironrnental ethics and law, forest 'eyaluatior ,-diorama
construction, soil science, the harvest of carefully chosen trees using draft horses ,sawing, diversified replgntin9 and protection
