HomeMy WebLinkAbout2000 eccEnfield Community Council Quarterly Report July 2000 - September 2000 Newsletter: As I mentioned in our last quarterly report we have updated our mailing list. Our new list consists of 1,149 names and addresses. This is over 200 new additions. One newsletter was published this quarter. The mailing was sent out in August for the period August - December 2000. The cost of the mailing was $1,197.28. The cost of future newsletters should be less as we had to enter the 1,149 names and addresses into a new program. We purchased a new newsletter program as well. It took some time to enter a new format into the program. Therefore, the expense to complete these two projects were a one time expense. These new programs will make furture newsletters easier to produce. Administrative: During this quarter the Enfield Community Council spent $938.31. This includes a bulk mailing annual fee, postage stamps, office supplies, bookkeeper fees, disability insurance, IRS filing fees and CPA fees. Summer Camp: Our Summer Camp expenses came to $29,677.98. Please find attached a detailed Summer Camp Report from Tonia Clate, Summer Camp Director and a Summer Camp Financial Report from Carol Givin, Treasurer, E.C.C.. As you can see this is our busiest time of the year and a substantial amount of money was spent. Teen Program (This includes MJF Youth Employment, CIT Program & Enrichment Program) During this quarter we spent $3,499.89 on our Teen Program, $687.31 on our MJF - Youth Employment Program, $2,550 on our CIT Program and $502.07 on our Enrichment Program.. Please find attached Shannon McSurely's detailed Program Reports for July, August and September 2000 and Cooperative Extension's Statement of Operations for September 2000. Sponsored Programs: We will be sponsoring the Enfield Elementary Basketball Teams again this school year. The cost for shirts will be given in the next Quarterly Report. Thank You! We had 104 children in attendance. While we usually close attendance at 100, there were applications found at the school that had been sent in and needed to be included. We had to turn away approximately 20 children due to full enrollment. Activities Each day the kids rotated through different activities. They participated in arts/crafts, drama, athletics, and science/nature. Four of the groups also participated in the computer/garden camp at Enfield School. Specials We had 3 special days. The first was The LaughOlympics which consisted of the peanut hunt, a bounce house, and wacky games. The second was a book carnival that included such things as a bounce house, book raffle, games, ice cream, live music, book making, bookmark making, and a book exchange table. Our last special was a waterday. This was the last day of camp, and the kids participated in a variety of games and activities with water. Field Trips We had a variety of field trips this summer. The whole camp enjoyed a day at Taughannock Park. The CIT's went to the Cayuga Nature Center to participate in the Team Challenge; the pre -k and 5' and 6a` grades went to the Gunning Farm; the I" and 2nd grades went to The Sciencenter, and the 3`d and 4d' grades went to the Paleontological Research Institute. Camp Visitors Tin Can Fantasy Factory came to camp to perform improvisation and a short play. John Simon came during our book festival and provided live singing. Brigid Hubberman, from The Family Reading Partnership, and Channel 7 news came to visit during our book carnival. We even made it on the 6:00 news. The Book Program The book program was an overwhelming success_ The campers borrowed books from our lending library and earned book bucks to "buy" new books from our book store. The kids loved the program and so did their families. The staff did a great job of promoting literacy through such activities as dressing their group up as book characters, reading aloud, helping campers choose books, and earning book bucks. We have established a large lending library through donations from Enfield School, The Family Reading Partnership, and camp families. We still have new books for the book store but we will need to find funding for new books for next year. The Family Reading Partnership, our grant provider, will no longer have a grant as of January 1, 2001. The Pond We were unable to open the pond for swimming this year due to the lack of lifeguards. We compensated by providing daily water activities such as the sprinkler and slip and slide. Health and Safetv We passed all of the health inspections. Audrey Ballander, the health inspector complimented our bookkeeping and used us to train her new staff. We had a few injuries in camp this summer. A staff member hurt his knee while playing athletics, a worker's compensation form has been filed. We also had two camper injuries, one broken arm which was sustained in the bounce house when one child fell on the other; and a possible broken finger when a camper was swinging his arm and hit the wall (happened yesterday, no data yet). The families of the campers were given the camp insurance information and an incident report was filed. Food Program This summer our food program was provided by the Ithaca City School District. Breakfast and lunch were served. The hot lunches, which were new this year were very popular with the kids, and we saw much less waste. Snacks were provided by the Enfield Food Giveaway. Next Year's Camp 1. Begin looking for lifeguards in February and get contracts signed. 2. Building cleanup should be planned early so the church can help. 3. Should consider opening camp up for more children. 4. Check the building capacity to see if we can accommodate more children. 5. Possibly have ECC members present during the food giveaways. 6. Buy more chairs. 7. Buy more folding tables. 8. Buy/find a printer for the computer. The six weeks went quickly -27.5* of my hours /week were spent in direct service at camp (8:45-2:15). • The Garden Technology program at school was an invaluable experience for those who accepted their assignment (only one person volunteered to work at -school for the morning shift) In addition to the incredible maintenance and planting of the gardens, these kids really learned how to build a web site, making links, scanning maps and drawings of weeds, insects. It was quite impressive. I encourage you all visit it at its temporary site geocities.com . After the first 2 weeks, I did some juggling and only two CITs happily settled into their 21 S' Century -roles and by the end of camp a couple of them were "planning" their own web site business ... if this program continues I think it will be more desirable for CITs next yr. • Training- in addition to cooperating with in their assigned /rotating groups of campers the CITs participated in several workshops including conflict resolution, child abuse, a bully workshop, age appropriate activities, and interviewing skills. • CIT Field Trips -A wonderful afternoon spent together at the Cayuga. Nature Center for a Team Challenge on the Ropes Course- they really worked together to figure out problems and had to use and identify different listening and negotiating skills.
