1999 Programs :
Afterschool ProLyram — In early 1999 the Parent Group and the ECC were
faced with a number of issues that would affect sponsorship of this
program. During the spring a series of meetings were held to discuss
upcoming state registration requirements and the impact these would have
on the program. It was decided that the parent group would evaluate
program options and in June voted to invite the YMCA of Tompkins County
to take over leadership of this program. In the fall of 1999 Vera Howe Stait
became the site coordinator. The program has expanded enrollment
numbers and days of operation. United Way funds are available for
scholarships.
Newsletter The Council is responsible for the production of three
newsletters each year. The newsletter is intended as a way to provide the
Enfield Community with updated Focal news and activity schedules,
including summer camp registration forms. Earl Kaiser served as the Editor
until December of 1999.
Summer Camp — Summer Camp is a six week summer program operated
at the Community Center and operates from 9:00 to 2:00. Before and after
camp care available for working parents. Programs include nature,
swimming, sports, arts and crafts, and drama. There are also a variety of
field trips and special days offered. This year the camp director was also
providing oversight to the after summer school camp operated at the
Enfield School.
CIT Program This Counselor in Training program provides an opportunity
for younger teens to receive specific training and work along side adult
counselors during the summer. The combination of workshops and hands
on experience provides an excellent background for young people hoping to
become counselors, when they are 16. In 1999 the counselors worked at
the camps at the Community center and at the Elementary school.
Each young person completing the CIT program received a stipend.
Teen Program: In early 1999 the ECC contracted with Cooperative
Extension for a 20 hours per week Program Manager to design and operate
teen programs and to set up family enrichment trips. This years activities
included but were not limited to; Club Tuesday, Green Masters,
Supersitters, family trips included, a trip to the Sky Chiefs Baseball game
in Syracuse, and a special Magic Night with Mike Stanley.
In September the ECC expanded the contract with Extension to 30 hours
per week and hired Shannon McSurely as the new program manager.
Programs have included a Monday Makers Club, Friday crafts activities at
Dewitt school, Excursions to the Science Center, Robertson Museum,
Syracuse Zoo, and hiking at Treman Park. The Outing program was offered
with 12 Enfield youth participating in outdoor adventure activities meant to
increase self confidence and group skills. A special highlight of the Teen
program this year were two Teen Dances organized by a group of local
teens, supported by local adults, held at the Community Building.
Recreation Partnershiu - The Town of Enfield is a member of the
Recreation Partnership. This is a partnership between the outlying
municipalities and City of Ithaca. Enfield pays a fee for this membership,
which enables youth living in the town to participate in the recreation
programs offered at the Ithaca Youth Bureau.
Basket Ball & Vollev Ball — These activities are operated by community
volunteers and take place at the Enfield Elementary School. These
activities are offered once a week and are open to older teens and adults.
