IN THIS WEEK'S ULYSSES NEWSLETTER: Environmental Updates Upcoming Meetings/Hearings Food Pantry Open on Monday Weather Spotter Class Library Book Sale Changes to Federal Nutrition Benefits(SNAP) Youth Employment ENVIRONMENTAL UPDATES: From NYS DEC: --April 17 is International Bat Appreciation Day International Bat Day is a great time to appreciate New York's nine bat species.When spring temperatures become warm enough, bats will leave their hibernation sites and may be seen flying in search of insects. Unfortunately, many species of bats,including Northern long-eared bats, have faced severe population declines due to White-nose Syndrome. Some bat facts: • They are insect-eating machines,eating thousands of flying insects in a single night! • Bats use echolocation(rapid pulses of sound that bounce off an object)to detect and catch insects. • Bats are more closely related to primates than to mice. • They are the only mammal that can fly. To view bats,check out your local park or forested area,especially near water and along trails. Even your own backyard can be a great place to view bats if you have trees near your home! Learn more about bats in Bats of New York State(PDF). --Earth Week During Earth Week, DEC's Division of Water invites you to find ways to help with its mission—"to protect and conserve the water resources of New York State." Local events: --Arbor Day-The Town Board passed a proclamation in support,and the Tree Council will plant some trees. More information here. --Earth Care Day- Tru-Uly Earth Care Day will be held on Saturday, May 2,from 10am-1pm at the Trumansburg Farmers Market. Activities include: • Free ice-cream coupons for participating youth • Food for purchase by JoJo Cooks • Reusable dishes from Dish Truck • Onsite Trash Art Build • Tables from local groups and businesses sharing sustainability and conservation info • (More activities still being confirmed) The program is supported by the Town of Ulysses and Village of Trumansburg(hence,the moniker!). Topics Include:The structure,formation,and hazards associated with different types of severe weather;the information the National Weather Service uses to issue warnings; how to help your community and the NWS track severe weather;and how to prepare and stay safe when severe weather or flooding occurs. For schedule and hours,visit https://www.trumansburglibrary.org/book-sales FEDERAL SNAP(SUPPLEMENTAL NUTRITION)BENEFIT CHANGES: The Tompkins County Department of Social Services(DSS)is encouraging residents to learn about important upcoming changes to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)that will affect some adults without children,while also highlighting strong local efforts to support those affected. If you are receiving SNAP benefits are curious if the new changes apply to you,take this quick survey. What's changing: Recent federal policy updates expand SNAP work requirements for Able-Bodied Adults Without Dependents(ABAWDs).The age range subject to work requirements is expanding to include adults ages 18-64.Some exemptions have been narrowed, including changes affecting households with children.Certain previously exempt groups,such as some individuals experiencing homelessness, veterans,and young adults formerly in foster care, may now be subject to requirements. Under federal law,ABAWDs are generally limited to three months of SNAP benefits within a three-year period unless they work or participate in qualifying employment,training,or education activities for at least 80 hours per month,or participate in an approved Work Experience Program. However, many individuals may still qualify for exemptions.These include people who are working at least 30 hours per week, pregnant,receiving disability or unemployment benefits, participating in substance use treatment,caring for someone who is ill or disabled,or enrolled in school or job training programs(meeting SNAP criteria). Volunteer Opportunities Share an opportunity or find one on the Tompkins Opportunity Platform https: tompkins-opportunity.orgz This centralized online hub allows residents to explore volunteer,training,and employment opportunities that count toward SNAP requirements,connect directly with local organizations,and identify pathways to build skills and gain experience. YOUTH EMPLOYMENT PROGAM NOW OPEN: The Town of Ulysses Youth Employment Program(YEP)is for Trumansburg area/Town of Ulysses teens.The primary goal of this program is to provide first-time job seekers with positive, paid work experience and an opportunity to develop meaningful job skills.
