Coming to you on an off-board meeting Friday in order to share what I know about the Podunk bridge closure.Scott Stewart (Highway Superintendent)and I have spoken to Tompkins County,and this is our understanding of the current situation: • Podunk Road is a Tompkins County roadway,and the Podunk bridge is also owned by the County. • NYS Department of Transportation(DOT)did a surprise inspection yesterday and notified the County about 12:30pm on Thursday(3/12)that the bridge was closed to all traffic(cars,pedestrians,everything)effectively immediately due to structural deterioration. • The structural deterioration means that it cannot be repaired;the entire structure must be replaced. • The County was awarded money from NYS in December 2021 to replace this bridge,but the approvals to do the work have been tied up in state-level review. • The bridge will likely be closed through 2027. • The County will be improving signage and putting up concrete barriers on the bridge. I very much appreciate that this is going to make daily travel more difficult for many area residents, including drivers,pedestrians, bicyclists,and farmers who use our backroads to access their fields. I will continue to advocate for action on replacing this critical infrastructure and appreciate our new County Legislator Rachel Ostlund for jumping in and helping us gather information quickly. Bridges and culverts(i.e. under road drainage)are essential for allowing water to flow and roads to remain open.They have been a very high priority of mine for 6 years,and the Ulysses Town Board and Highway Superintendent have strongly supported investment in these important resources. Since 2023,we've received more than$3 million in grant funds to replace or repair bridges and culverts on Curry Road, Maplewood Road,Garrett Road,and Agard Road.We are on track to begin construction in 2027 on Curry Road,with the others to follow in 2028- 2029. At our last town board meeting(3/10/26),a majority of the Town Board (Olson, Manley,and Weatherby in favor, Boggs opposed) supported applying for grant funds to replace the culvert on Reynolds Road near Podunk. In very high-water situations,this section has come close to cresting over the roadway,and engineering assessments show that the bank and the infrastructure are deteriorating.When roadways get repeatedly destroyed by overflowing water and banks erode,abrupt washouts and closures can occur and this significantly increases costs and human safety risks. I continue to support making sure that Town-owned infrastructure is safe and functional,and am glad to be working with Highway Superintendent Scott Stewart and our Legislator Rachel Ostlund to secure funds and offset costs to the local taxpayer. about:blank 1/3 3/16/26, 10:33 AM Ulysses Updates for 3/13/26-Casey Beck-Outlook As I know more about the Podunk bridge closure, I will push the information out through the newsletter and in Town Board meetings. CITIZEN PREPAREDNESS CORPS CLASS OFFERED IN DANBY ON MARCH 24TH The Citizen Preparedness Corps gives residents the tools and resources to prepare for any type of disaster or emergency, respond accordingly,and recover as quickly as possible to pre-disaster conditions. The next training session in Tompkins County is scheduled for Tuesday,March 24th at 6:00pm at the Danby Community Church, 1859 Danby Road and will be led by the New York National Guard working with experts from the NYS Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services(DHSES). Each family that attends will receive one NYS Disaster Preparedness Kit.The training is free of charge,but registration is required at:www.poepare.nygov. NOTE:Space is limited and registration will be cut off once the venue's capacity has been reached.
