Election Information UPDATE FROM TOWN SUPERVISOR: Greetings, Ulyssians! A huge, massive THANK YOU to our local, county and state law enforcement officers whose efforts resulted in the safe return of a local child on Friday. Thank you also to the many area residents who circulated information and checked cameras and outbuildings for her. As Mr. Rogers reminded us, "look for the helpers." Although there's a bit of snow still on the ground, registration for summer camp is rapidly approaching. If you're not already enrolled in Ulysses RecDesk (our online software for registrations), please take time to do it BEFORE camp registration opens on March 14 at 8am. It takes just a few minutes and we have programming for youth and adults. Coming up, the Town Board next convenes at 7pm next Tuesday at Town Hall. The board packet can be found here. Having successfully received funding for Garrett Road and Agard Road culverts, we'll be considering a grant application for a culvert on Reynolds Road next. Along with other business, we'll also receive a presentation from Cornell Cooperative Extension on the Citizen Pruners program. Please join us either in person or online! Finally, be sure to Save-The-Date! The morning of Saturday, April 11th will be the State of the Town at the Fire Hall. As Chair of the Senate's Committee on Women's Issues, I am committed to fighting for equitable access to period supplies. For far too many women and girls, the cost of period supplies creates significant barriers to attending school, working, and fully participating in their daily lives. In New York, a month's supply of period products costs $15.56—the highest in the nation. People who menstruate in New York will spend, on average, $7,282.08 over the course of their lifetime on period products. I want to thank our community partners for joining my office in this initiative. I invite the community to donate supplies and help us address the need for menstrual products in Broome, Cortland, and Tompkins Counties. The last day to donate is March 27th, 2026. WHAT LURKS IN THE LAKE? MAKING SENSE OF HARMFUL ALGAL BLOOMS: Free public presentations unpack HAB data, lake health trends, and what reports really reveal about Cayuga Lake Harmful algal blooms (HABs) are increasingly visible in lakes across the Finger Lakes region—but what do the reports really mean for water quality and public health? Community members are invited to explore this question during What Lurks in the Lake? From Reports to Reality: Making Sense of Harmful Algal Bloom Data, an engaging public presentation by Alyssa Johnson, Cayuga Lake Harmful Algal Bloom Monitoring Program Coordinator at the Community Science Institute (CSI). This lively and informative talk will examine harmful algal blooms occurring on Cayuga Lake, with broader context relevant to lakes throughout the Finger Lakes region. Johnson will review data from the 2025 HAB season on Cayuga Lake and guide attendees through how to interpret bloom reports— explaining why the number of reports does not always reflect the number of blooms present, and what emerging trends reveal about lake health and water quality over time. Participants will learn how HABs form, how to identify them, and why they matter for ecological health, drinking water, recreation, and human and animal safety. The presentation will also highlight the essential role local volunteers play in tracking blooms and building the long-term datasets needed to understand and protect freshwater resources. "These programs are designed to help people make sense of the data they see in news reports and online dashboards," said Johnson. "Understanding patterns and trends—not just individual bloom sightings—is key to protecting our lakes and making informed decisions about water use and safety." CAYUGA LAKE WATERSHED INTERNSHIP PROGRAM: The Cayuga Lake Watershed Internship Program (WIP) offers paid internship opportunities for young adults aged 18-25. Interns will gain insight into the fields of watershed protection, management, access and education from a variety of perspectives. Interns are hosted by partner organizations in line with their interests and skills and is meant to be an enriching, engaging and enjoyable experience! The program runs from early June to mid-August and positions are 20-40 hours per week. A diverse pool of people from various socioeconomic, racial and gender identity backgrounds is sought.
