FROM THE ULYSSES BEE COMMITTEE:
The cold and snowy weather we're having doesn't mean we can't plan for spring gardens. The Pollinator Pathway organization is
offering a free webinar on "Pollinators and People: How We Can Help"on Thursday February 5th at 6:30 pm. This event will look at
actions you can take at the state and local levels to challenge the use of pollinator-toxic pesticides in our landscapes. More

Homeowner Native Plant Garden Grant-Tompkins County residents are eligible to apply for up to$200 in grants to establish native
plant gardens,sponsored by Wild Ones HGCNY. More information and application guidelines can be found at Grant Guidelines The
deadline for application is March 31,2026. As a bonus,awardees can be pared with a"garden buddy,"a volunteer mentor providing
advice and encouragement about their native garden,from planning through planting.

• document weather and traffic conditions;
• record migrating amphibians;
• and help them across the road.
The team at the Hudson River Estuary Program will be providing one virtual and three in-person volunteer trainings this year.
Because our in-person trainings have limited space,we will give priority to volunteers from the Hudson River estuary watershed,
especially those who have not attended an in-person program before. If you are a returning volunteer and need a refresher, please
considerjoining the virtual session.

Training topics will include volunteer protocols,safety measures,data collection and reporting on Survey123,and species
identification. If you're unable to attend an in-person or virtual program,you can view our YouTube training modules.We would like
all volunteers to complete some form of training prior to surveying roads and submitting data.Thank you!
Highly pathogenic avian influenza in wild birds expected to increase over winter months:
Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza(HPAI)continues to infect birds and mammals across the U.S.and Canada,including New York
State. In November and December 2025, DEC received 69 reports of suspect mortalities,and presumptive positive cases were
detected in wild birds in 10 counties.
There is no treatment for HPAI,and transporting suspected HPAI-infected birds to wildlife rehabilitation facilities is discouraged to
prevent the spread of the disease to other animals in their care.
HPAI is carried by free-flying waterfowl and other waterbirds,such as ducks,geese,and shorebirds, but can also infect domestic
poultry, raptors,corvids,and mammals. DEC's Wildlife Health Program is monitoring the spread and impact of HPAI throughout the
state and has an online reporting tool the public can use to report suspected HPAI mortalities: NYSDEC Avian Influenza
Reporting Form. Updates on HPAI can be found on the Cornell Wildlife Health Lab website.
The U.S.Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that the recent HPAI detections in birds pose a low risk to the public. HPAI
H51\11 has been detected in more than 70 humans in the U.S.,including two mortalities; most of these cases involved close contact
with infected domestic birds or cows. No human-to-human transmission of the virus has been documented.

COMMUNITY SCIENCE INSTITUTE'S 2026 DATA JAM:INVESTIGATING LOCAL WATER QUALITY
Interested members of the public are invited to experiment with local water data and test their theories on Saturday,February 21,
2026 from 1-3pm at the Borg Warner Room,Tompkins County Public Library.
The event is free but registration is preferred. Please bring a laptop and charging cable,if you don't have your own,you can check
one out from the library.

The Village of Trumansburg will holds its annual State of the Village event to give citizens an opportunity to hear about programs and
